Introduction

我们日常生活中所见的书写文字有个大问题──它们的拼写有时候是不规则的。照英语的拼读原理，said不会读作“sed”。许多英文字中最常见的词，其发音都不规则，例如：the、 off、 of、 what、 to、 do、where、 who等，显然，英文不是规律的拼音文字，它是拉丁语、希腊语和法语的混合物，但是我们应该想办法，让初习英语阅读的孩子有简单易懂的材料。Distar系统解决了这个困难，我们创造了新的字母，这些字母有两个功能：首先，某些具有多重发音的字母可以被清楚地区分开来，这样我们就能创造出许许多多拼读完全规律的单词（每个语音只有一种发音。）同时，这套字母让我们仍然能够在字面上看到传统的字母拼法。下面是我们创造的Distar字母：

你也许注意到了，字母a和e各有两种形式，借着这样的设计，我们可以让he和went完全规律化，我们把he改成hē， went还是went。现在这两个词已经等于其组成字母语音的总和，换句话说，只要读出每个字母的语音，就能成功地并读出它来了。这套字母也包括一些“字母组合”，例如rain，就可以写成rain，对初习阅读的孩子来说，这样连接非常重要，因为和i在一起时，事实上只发一个音，而不是两个。D istar也用了小号的字母来维持原来英文拼音系统的拼音法，规则很简单，读者只要看到小号的字母，就不发音。有了小号字母，我们把lake改写成lake，现在新的写法已经完全符合字母拼读原则了。孩子不必读出最后一个e，但他知道这个单词要写成l-a-k-e。
现在整个句子用Distar字母表示，变成：
Hē and shē went to the lāke.
现在，这句话里所有的单词都规律化了，每个字母有且只有一个读音，只有两个例外， the和to。而像the和to这样的不规则词，为孩子练习不规则词的发音提供了机会，使他们从Distar字母回到传统英文字母的转换与衔接过程更加顺利。

关于课程中的具体练习
1. 语音练习橙色的字是家长/教师在课程中要说的话，括号外黑色的字是孩子的反应。具体语音符号对应的发音用特殊的字母符号表示，如果字母符号连续出现（例如aaa），说明这个发音可以延长；如果只出现一次（如t），则说明此语音不能延长，需要快速读出。具体语音符号对应的发音可以参考本书第8页的“发音指南表格”。
2. 押韵练习本书中的“押韵”并不是要孩子练习作诗，掌握韵脚，而是希望将具有相同尾音的单词组成一个“词族”，让孩子不断练习，听到和读出具有同样尾音的单词，增强对语音的记忆。最初的联系比较简单，多为单音节词。例如，语音c要和at押韵（或押韵at），就需要孩子将at接在c的后面，直接读出cat，然后再联系用p和at押韵，读出pat。当孩子有了一定的单词积累，再练习押韵mother， brother等多音节单词。
3. 语音书写从第一课开始，前四分之三的课程都有这一内容。这是为了让孩子通过自己写出来，熟悉语音符号，通过边写边读，加深对语音的印象。从Lesson 76开始，每课的书写内容转为“字母书写”，原版教材的用意是从这里开始完成由语音向字母学习的过渡，同时也让孩子熟悉特定的字母在大多数情况下会对应哪些语音，在将来的阅读中也可以自己拼读出常用单词。
4. 安排字母学习传统的英文教学是先教字母名称及书写，但本书的设计是先教字母所表示的语音，然后再教语音的书写， Lesson 73才开始介绍小写字母名称， Lesson 81才开始引入大写字母。如果孩子之前完全没有学过英文字母，那么强烈建议按照本书的顺序来教；但如果学生已经学会英文的大小写字母，那么每一课里的“字母书写”任务，及Lesson 73～Lesson 86中的字母名称教学则可以视情况跳过。
5. 就故事内容提问大多数故事在课程中要读两次，第一次阅读时的重点是认读语音和单词，第二次的重点则在于对句子和段落的理解。教材中的“第二次读故事”安排了家长/教师就故事内容提问的环节，中文版教程中保留了较简单问题的原文，而将相对较难的问句翻译成了中文。无论用哪种语言提问，教师和家长都应当鼓励孩子用英文回答问题，这样才能够了解孩子对英文文章的理解程度。
