前言
《美国货币史》洋洋大观，其主旨，以金融研究界的共识，一言以蔽之，就是“货币很重要”：货币是一个对经济有着重大影响的独立而可控的力量。在经济史上，可能很难找到比当前席卷全球的次贷危机更好的案例来分析和印证“货币很重要”这个观点了。如果说此前的经济周期基本上是从实体经济的投资和消费活动扩散到金融市场的话，那么，当前的次贷危机可以说是第一次全球意义上从货币金融市场的动荡迅速传导到实体经济的新的经济周期，货币金融因素成为经济波动的最为关键的因素。主导这场全球金融海啸的，是以华尔街为代表的金融机构制造出来的、被高杠杆扩散到全球的“有毒资产”，是华尔街自己制造出来的“货币魔鬼”。货币从这个层面再次证明了它自身的重要性。
美国一些金融界人士一度认为，美国不幸之中的万幸，是在这场金融危机中，以研究大萧条著称的伯南克教授，正好担任美联储的主席，这使得此前只能代表伯南克研究水准的关于大萧条的专业成果，能够迅速成为美联储的力度很大的具体政策举措。如果从通常的教科书意义上，伯南克及其领导下的美联储在危机中采用了种种政策措施，在传统的中央银行学中多数是“非典型的货币政策”，但是其基本思路来自伯南克对于大萧条的研究。而在对于大萧条的种种深刻的研究中，弗里德曼及其《美国货币史》都是其中的权威著作，说伯南克的研究和当前的政策深受弗里德曼《美国货币史》的影响，并不是一个很夸张的说法，读者可以从本书的分析脉络中找到当前美联储和全球央行救市政策的理论上的蛛丝马迹。
第1章绪论
本书讨论了美国货币存量。书中回顾了自南北战争（Civi1 War）刚刚结束到1960年的将近一个世纪的时间里美国货币存量的变化，研究了其变化的决定因素，并分析了货币存量对历史重大事件的影响。
我们的分析之所以从1867年开始，是因为1867年是美国货币存量估计值形成连续序列的最早时点。当《国民银行法》（Nationa1 Banking Act）在南北战争期间通过的时候，人们都相信州立银行很快就将不复存在。结果，联邦针对州立银行的系统的数据统计中止了。但正如我们所知道的那样，州立银行只是经历了暂时的萎靡，并没有完全地衰落。因此，我们的统计数据中有一段严重的缺失。南北战争前的统计数据也要比1863—1867年的数据更容易获得。

Introduction

本书的由来，起源于十多年前我们中的一员与已故的沃尔特·斯图尔特的一次谈话。谈话的内容是如何对商业周期中的货币因素进行统计研究（这是当时美国国民经济研究局所作的关于经济周期研究项目的一部分）。斯图尔特强调最好将美国内战之后的货币发展情况加以“分析性描述”（analytical narrative），以作为统计研究的背景，同时也指出有关“描述”的资料在当时并不容易获得，但是这种“分析性描述”会在数据之外为分析增加更为需要的视角。
