美国著名作家和演说家，真实姓名是萨缪尔·兰亨·克莱门（SamuelLanghorneClemens）。“马克·吐温”是他的笔名，原是密西西比河水手使用的表示在航道上所测水的深度的术语。马克·吐温是色盲，他做过印刷所学徒、报童、排字工人、水手、淘金工人、记者等工作。于1910年4月21日因狭心症去世，享年七十五岁，安葬于纽约州艾玛拉。

Book Abstract

离圣彼得堡镇三英里远的地方，是密西西比河的下游，那里水宽约有一英里。水上有个草木丛生的狭长小岛，小岛前方有一片浅滩，正是集结的好去处。岛上荒无人烟，离对岸很远。岸边有茂密的树林，人迹罕至。于是，他们选中了这个名叫“杰克逊岛”的地方，至于当海盗后，该打劫谁，那是以后的事，他们暂时不去想。
后来，他们又找到哈克贝利·芬，邀他入伙，他爽快答应，因为对他来说，干哪一行都一样，反正他也无所谓。不久，他们暂时分手，约定在最佳时机，也就是半夜时分，在离镇两英里处上游河岸一个僻静的地方碰头。
那里有只小木筏，他们打算占为己有，还规定每个人必须带上钓鱼钩和钓鱼线，以及用最隐秘的手段偷来的东西作为给养，就像海盗常干的那样。后半晌时，趁天没黑，他们开始得意洋洋地四处散布消息，说不久全镇将会“听到特大新闻”，还警告受到这一微妙暗示的人格外小心，叫他们“保持沉默，静候音讯”。
大约半夜时分，汤姆带着一条煮熟的火腿和其他一些小物品赶来，他在悬崖上一片茂密的灌木丛停住脚步，俯瞰崖下他们约好的集合地。夜空星光灿烂，四周一片寂静。大河悄无声息，就像深沉的海洋一般平静。汤姆侧耳细听，没有任何声音打破这一片岑寂。
于是，他吹了一声口哨，声音虽低，却也清晰可辨。悬崖下方立刻有人回应。汤姆又吹了两声，又听到同样的回应。接着一个声音警觉地高叫：
“来者何人？”
“我乃加勒比海黑衣侠盗汤姆·索亚。尔等何人？”
“血手恶煞哈克贝利·芬，海上凶神乔·哈珀。”这两个名号是汤姆从他最喜爱的故事书中挑出来封给他俩的。

在静谧的暗夜，两个低沉沙哑的嗓子同时发出一个可怕的字音：
“血！”
汤姆把火腿抛下悬崖，自己也跟着滑下来，这一滑不要紧，结果划破了衣服，蹭破了皮。其实，悬崖下方有一条易行的小道直达岸边，但对一个无所畏惧的海盗而言，走这条小道太舒坦，不能显示自己的英雄本色。海上凶神提来一大块咸猪肉，这块猪肉几乎把他累垮。
血手恶煞偷来一个平底锅和许多烤得半干的烟叶，他还弄来几个玉米棒芯，准备拿它们做烟斗。不过，除他之外，另外两个海盗不抽烟叶也不“嚼”烟草。加勒比海黑衣侠盗说什么“无火不起事”。
这个建议实在是高明明！--在那个年代，人们几乎没听说过火柴这个东西。他们看见上游一百码处的一只大木筏上燃着一堆火，便偷偷溜过去，取了一块火炭。接下来，他们煞有介事地开始搞冒险活动，时而嘴里发出“嘘”的一声，手指压住嘴唇，示意停止前进，继而手握想象中的短剑向前冲锋，嘴里低声发出森严的命令，说什么只要“敌人”胆敢来犯，一定“让他死于剑下”“杀人灭口”等等。他们明知撑筏人一定是到镇里赌钱或者寻欢作乐去了，但仍按海盗的做法来偷木筏。
不久，他们把木筏推离岸边，由汤姆指挥，哈克划后桨，乔划前桨。汤姆站在木筏中央，愁眉蹙额，紧抱双臂，声音低沉地发出严厉的命令：
“转舵，逆风行驶！”
“得令，头领！”
“稳住……稳住！”
“已稳住，头领！”
“束帆绳！”
“帆绳已束，头领！”
三个孩子平稳而又单调地划着木筏往中流驶去，这些命令毫无疑问纯粹是为了耍“派头”，而不表示特定的意义。
“现在起的是什么帆？”
“大横帆，中桅帆，三角帆，头领！”
“起上桅帆！全部张开。嗨，你们六个一起上，起前中帆！使劲，快点！”
“得令，头领！”
“嘿，伙计们！张开上桅帆！系帆脚索和操帆索！”
“得令，头领！”
“鬼天气，我们在风口下……不好！风要来了，稳住！左转，左转！嗨，伙计们！加把劲！稳住！”
“已稳住，头领！”
木筏驶过中流，孩子们转正筏头，继续划桨。水位不高，顶多只有二三英里长的流域。他们谁也不吭声，这样足足过了四十五分钟。
这时，木筏已划过远处的镇子。宽阔的河面上繁星点点，放眼望去，对岸的镇上只有两三家灯火在夜空下隐隐闪烁。
人们都已安然入睡，对这里发生的非常事件丝毫没有觉察。
黑衣侠盗抱着双臂，站在木筏上纹丝不动，他把“最后一眼”投向给过他欢乐和苦恼的地方。但愿此刻“她”能一睹他的雄姿--昂首挺立在波涛汹涌的大海上，勇敢面对凶险和死亡，嘴角挂着一丝冷笑，毫无惧色，从容走向“不归路”。

Introduction

本书讲述的历险故事大部分都真实可信。其中一部分是我自己的亲身经历，其余事件发生在我的小学同学中。哈克贝利·芬确有其人；汤姆·索亚也有生活原型，但并非取自一人。
他是根据我认识的三个孩子而塑造的，我把三人的性格特征集于一人之身。因此，他就像是由建筑材料堆砌而成的人物。
书中提到的一些奇怪迷信，当时曾在西部的儿童和奴隶中十分流行。不过，那已经是三四十年前的事了。
我写此书的主要目的，是想为少年儿童提供一个娱乐天地，但我希望成年人不要嫌弃。我衷心希望，成人读到此书也能唤起童年的美好回忆，想起自己儿时的感受和言行，以及当初偶尔有过的怪念头和做过的荒唐事。这也是我创作计划的一部分。
