Author Description

约翰·托兰（John Toland），美国历史作家。出版非小说类大众历史11本，以历史为背景的小说2本，自传1本，享誉世界。内容以二战及其前后为主，其中《日本帝国的衰亡》一书曾获普利策奖，另三部描写亚太战争的力作《美国的耻辱》、《占领日本》和《漫长的战斗》也颇具影响，成为畅销书或常销书。2004年，托兰因病去世，享年92岁。

那天下午，威尔和约翰·W.费利携同一位翻译和一名文书来到巢鸭监狱的一间小审讯室。等待东条时费利说，其他战犯都不和东条讲话，放风时他总是抽着烟，独自一人在院子里慢慢踱步。和其他战犯不同，东条在开始接受询问时总要发几句牢骚。他会说，能不能制止美国兵把他的烟斗和手绢拿去当纪念品？他们甚至偷拿他衬衣上的扣子和念经用的佛珠。“不过，你会发现他是个相当和蔼的人，尽管他由于过分苛刻而被我们称为‘剃刀片’。”
东条走进屋子，鞠躬施礼后坐下来。他抱怨乙级和丙级战犯所受的待遇太差，这些战犯包括被控虐待过战俘的军官、士兵和平民。他们在横滨受审。东条要求多关照这些战犯的那种傲慢神态令威尔感到作呕。之后，东条微笑着指出，他的囚室号码不吉祥，是44号。由于4在日语中意味着死，两个4是不是多了一点？此外，囚室里都太冷。
