无线通信已成为全球通信和IT界共同关注的热门技术。如果说数字通信和互联网是信息技术的革命性演进，那么人们现在会真真切切地为无线通信与互联网的融合，直至未来宽带传输多媒体信息的巨变所震撼。近几年中，包括UWB、蓝牙、WLAN、WiMAX、Mobile-Fi、ZigBee等各种无线新技术的出现，随时、随地、随心所欲地连接到Internet，让网络无处不在的梦想几乎触手可及。在企业、家庭内部，无线应用将彻底改变人们日常工作、生活的方式。
随着802.11标准的发展，无线局域网技术也已日臻成熟，而且其传输速率、通信距离也在不断增加，能够满足诸多场合的应用需求。除了组网以外，无线网络在下一步的发展中还可以结合自身的技术特点，开发出各种增值性应用，例如语音、视频应用等。这种技术已经具有足够的可靠性和速度，可以提供可靠的移动企业计算服务。
截至2005年3月底，仅在我国的互联网上网人数已达到9880万，以移动通信为代表的无线通信业务增长迅速，达到3.35亿用户。 “无线技术成为下一代网络通信技术的最大推动力”这一观点已在业界达成了共识。近十几年来，第二代移动系统得到了迅猛发展，同时也推动了第三代移动通信技术的发展和应用。第三代移动通信系统主要解决系统应用中的便易性、多媒体业务、个性化、综合服务等问题，使用户能够在任何地点、任何时间使用移动终端，在不同无线网络系统间实现个人通信。除具备传统的语音服务外，第三代移动通信系统应提供基于高速数据传输能力的多媒体服务业务，能够为不同职业、不同环境和消费层次的用户提供满足需求的个性化服务，方便地获取所需的信息。
2004年，第三代移动通信应用进入活跃期，但由于采用的标准以及缺乏真正的“杀手”级应用等多方因素的制约，其发展一直坎坷。但第三代移动通信系统代表着未来的无线通信发展趋势却是勿庸置疑的。像一切技术的应用一样，第三代移动通信服务走向成熟还需要时间，以及更成熟和可靠的技术。第三代移动通信技术无论是在市场规模还是发展空间方面，都将远远超越于其他无线技术。
William Stallings是国际上著名的计算机专家，早年获得麻省理工学院计算机博士学位。他先后出版了17种不同的教材，各种版本加起来多达41本。作者先后7次获得TAA（美国计算机科学及工程教材与学术著作作者协会）的年度最佳教材奖。另外，他还连续3年获得了TAA颁发的优秀教材奖。他的多本著作已在我国翻译并出版，且被许多高校选作教材或重要的参考书。本书是作者编写的关于无线通信和网络的第一本专著。书中全面介绍了无线通信和无线网络方面的内容，覆盖了无线通信和网络中有关技术和体系结构、网络设计方法、网络类型和应用等关键的论题。

本书自第1版出版后，无线技术领域经历了很多新的变化，作者力图在新的版本中能够反映这些变化。本书的技术内容完全做了更新，每一章都做了修订，同时增加了很多新的内容，包括最小移频键控、CDMA2000、WiMAX和IEEE 802.16a、正交频分多路复用、Wi-Fi、不规则编码、Wi-Fi保护接入、IEEE 802.15和个人区域网、栅格编码调制（TCM）等。
本书适用于高年级的本科生和研究生使用，对于从事无线通信和网络研究的工程技术人员，本书也是很好的基础性参考书。
本书由中国人民大学信息学院何军副教授负责翻译。
译者在对新版本的翻译中仍发现了书中的一些错误，这些错误已在翻译过程中改正，同时译者还对本书第1版译本中一些术语的翻译做了修正，以使这些术语的译文尽量符合我国学术及工业界的使用。限于水平，翻译不妥或错误之处在所难免，敬请广大读者批评指正。
