晚上九点正，我和苏斯托夫一道来到阿尔卡其·尼古拉耶维奇家里。
我告诉他，使我抱屈的是，灵感被演员的盘算所代替了。
“是要被它代替的，”托尔佐夫肯定地说，“……就像上课我给你们表演的那样。
“演员在创作时是过着双重生活的。关于这一点，托玛佐·萨尔维尼曾经这样说道：〔‘……当我表演的时候，我过着双重的生活，我一面哭和笑，同时又在分析自己的笑声和眼泪，好让它们能够更强烈地影响我想要触动的人们的心。’〕
“你们已经看到，双重性并不妨碍灵感。恰恰相反！它们是相辅相成的。
“我们在实际生活中也常常有这种双重性。但这并不妨碍我们去生活，并不妨碍我们强烈地去感受。
“记得吗，当初讲到任务和贯串动作的时候，我曾经对你们讲到两种平行的远景。
“一种是角色的远景。
“另一种是演员和他在舞台上的生活、他在创作时的心理技术的远景。
“不久以前我在课上向你们说明的那条道路，就是心理技术的道路，也就是演员本人远景的线。它跟角色远景的线很相近，它和角色远景的线平行，就像一条和大路平行的小径一样。但有时演员由于某种原因被一些不相干的、跟角色无关的东西吸引了去，离开了角色的线，于是这两种线便岔开去，各趋一方。那时候他就会失掉角色的远景。不过幸亏我们拥有心理技术，它能够借助于各种诱饵经常引导我们回到正路上来，就像小径经常引导步行者回到大路上似的。”
我们请求阿尔卡其·尼古拉耶维奇比较详细地对我们讲一讲角色的远景和演员的远景，这个问题他从前只是顺便提到过。阿尔卡其·尼古拉耶维奇不愿意离开教学进度，把教学计划的顺序弄乱。“角色和演员的远景是属于下一学年的，也就是属于‘创造角色’这个范围的，”他说。但是，我们的详细探问却引得他谈了起来。他谈得很起劲，连他自己都不觉得怎么会谈到他总想保持缄默的那个话题的。“前些时候，我在……剧场里看到一出五幕剧，”今天上课时，阿尔卡其·尼古拉耶维奇讲述道。“第一幕演过之后，无论是整个演出和演员们的表演都使我十分高兴。他们创造了鲜明的形象，情绪很饱满，表演手法也很独特，很使我感到兴趣。我怀着好奇心注视着剧本和演员表演的发展。
“可是在第二幕中，我们看到的却又是我们在第一幕里见到过的东西。于是观众的情绪和我对这个演出的兴趣都大大减低了。第三幕过后，情形也是一样，不过程度上更厉害一些，因为那些丝毫没有深化、使形象陷于呆滞状态的同样的东西，那些观众已经看惯了的同样的热情，那些已经蜕化成刻板的同样的表演手法，都显得笨拙不堪，令人讨厌和生气。演到第五幕中段，我简直忍无可忍了。我已经不再看舞台，也不再听那里在说些什么，只想如何偷偷溜出剧场。
“剧本、演员表演和整个演出都很好，为什么印象会这样淡下来呢？”
“因为平板，”我说。
“上一个星期我参加过一个音乐会。那里也发生了‘平板’的情形。乐队是很好的，奏的交响乐也很好。可就是自始至终都奏得一样，速度、音量几乎都没有什么变化，细致的地方也表现不出来。这在听众算是受了一次活罪。
“为什么好演员演的好剧本，好乐队演奏的好交响乐会没有任何成就呢？
“这难道不是由于演员们和音乐家们在创作时缺乏一种远景吗？
“我们所谓的‘远景’就是指在把握整个剧本和角色这一条件下对各个部分所作的慎重而和谐的对比和配置。”
“‘对各个部分所作的和谐的对比和配置……’”，维云佐夫设法把这话硬挤进自己的脑子里去。
“这就是说，”阿尔卡其·尼古拉耶维奇赶忙来帮助他。“任何表演、动作、思想、言语、情感等等都不能没有相应的远景。哪怕是最简单的上台或下台，或者只是坐在那里参加某一场戏，只讲一句话、一段独白等等，也都应该有远景和最终目的（最高任务）。如果没有这些，就是像‘是’或‘不’这样一些最简单的字眼都会说不好。大的形体动作，复杂思想的表达，许许多多部分所组成的复杂情感和热情的体验，一直到一场戏，一幕戏，整出戏，都不能没有远景和最终目的（最高任务）。
