一、《资本论》研究的对象
马克思说：“我要在本书研究的，是资本主义生产方式以及和它相应的生产关系和交换关系。”第8页，由于对这句话的不同理解，引起多年的争论。争论的焦点是除生产关系外，生产力是不是它的研究对象。但是，如果将话中的“生产方式”理解为生产形式(即生产关系)，那么就会得出“生产关系以及和它相应的生产关系”，这样的前言与后语同义反复，显然是不对的。其实，书中已经区分开了。在第330—331页就说过，“物质生产方式的改变和生产者的社会关系的相应的改变……”。后来在1872年法文版中，马克思多处也将“生产方式”指为“生产(技术)方式”这都明确指为生产力了。对比恩格斯又有另一种说法。大家知道，他在1878年出版的《反杜林论》中讲过，“政治经济学作为一门研究人类各种社会进行生产和交换并相应地进行产品分配的条件和形式的科学”。这里，条件指生产的物质内容，即生产力的构成要素；形式指生产关系。当时马克思看过并无异议。马克思于1883年逝世，1886年由恩格斯校订的英文版《资本论》问世。上面初版序言那句话被译为：“我要在本书研究的，是资本主义生产形式，以及和它相应的生产和交换的条件。”这又和《反杜林论》一致。简单地讲，法文版讲的是生产力以及相应的生产关系；英文版讲的是生产关系以及相应的生产力；两者虽次序颠倒，但都提到生产力(生产技术方式或生产条件)。
事实上，这符合《资本论》的内容。《资本论》第1卷第一章第一节就开宗明义地指出：“劳动生产力是由多种情况决定的，其中包括：劳动者的平均熟练程度，科学的发展水平和它在工艺上应用的程度，生产过程的社会结合，生产资料的规模和效能，以及自然条件。”这一种种情况都在书中加以阐述。况且，书中所揭示的两条重大规律都是和生产力分不开的。其中，价值规律归根到底是以反比形式表现生产力变化的规律，剩余价值以及价值增殖规律则是以
提高生产力作为手段所达到的目的的规律。这些原理贯穿在3卷《资本论》之中。所有这些原理对当今我国社会主义经济建设也是非常重要的。
可喜的是，近年来许多经济学家开始重视对生产力的研究。现在的问题是，理论经济学的对象还应该延伸到作为生产力的源泉的生态环境和人口进行研究。如果生态环境遭到破坏，使再生性资源不能再生，非再生性资源难以寻得替代，社会经济就不能持续发展。如果环境中生命支撑系统全面崩溃，人类社会就会随之灭亡，也就谈不上经济的发展。但环境之所以遭受破坏，又是由于人口数量过剩、素质过低。我们现在经济建设的过程，不正是处处遇到这些基本问题吗?虽然马克思在上述决定生产力的因素中已经指出，它包括劳动者(人口)和自然条件(生态环境)，但未展开。这正有待我们去研究去发展。
研究对象还涉及经济学与文理各学科之间联系问题。经济学正是因为研究生产力而成为文理相通的通道。既然“科学的发展水平和它在工艺上应用的程度”也是决定生产力的因素，而且“生产力首先是科学”，自然科学也就由此进入社会科学，由此还经过生产力的社会形式(生产关系)，再通向上层建筑各个学科。列宁曾就此指出：“自然科学奔向社会科学的强大潮流，不仅在配第时代存在，在马克思时代也是存在的。在20世纪，这个潮流是同样强大，甚至可以说更加强大了。”况且，经济学也要关心自然科学的发展，探索它如何转化为生产力的发展。正因为如此，“在马克思看来，科学是一种在历史上起推动作用的、革命的力量”。
