假想你是只心宽体胖的实验白鼠，住在一个豢养箱里，那里已经成为你温馨舒适的家。一天，箱子打开了，伸进来一只戴手套的手，轻轻把你取出来，放进另一个箱子，这里不如你原来住的地方舒服，里面有迷宫一样复杂的通道。你天性好奇，于是晃动着胡须，摸索着往里走。你很快发现，有一部分通道的墙壁是黑的，另一部分是白的。你一边用鼻子嗅，一边进入白色通道，里面没有什么异常。然后你左转进入黑色通道，刚刚进去，立刻感觉到一股强烈的电流通过你的爪子向全身袭来。
此后的一个星期，你每天被放进不同的迷宫。每个迷宫通道墙壁的颜色都不一样，危险和安全的区域标记以及电击的强度也各不相同：红色通道里，电击强度很轻微；带圆点的通道，电击强度非常强烈；还有的安全区，地面上覆盖着黑白棋盘格子。日复一日，你的任务就是学着如何选择最安全的通道穿过迷宫，同时要躲避电击（你安全穿过迷宫得到的奖励就是逃过电击）。你做得怎样呢?
一个多世纪以前，心理学家罗伯特·亚尔克斯和约翰·多德森对上述基本课题作了不同形式的实验，以求得出关于实验白鼠行为的两个答案：第一，它们的学习能有多快；第二，更重要的是，电击能在多大程度上激励它们加快学习的速度。我们很容易就能推断，随着电击强度的提高，实验白鼠受到的学习激励也相应提高。当电击程度非常轻微时，白鼠不过是慢慢走开，偶尔一次小小的电击不会造成痛感，也不会产生激励作用。但是随着电击强度和痛感的加强，科学家们认为，实验白鼠会感到它们处在敌人火力攻击之下，因此受到激励，加快学习速度。亚尔克斯和多德森进一步推断，如果实验白鼠企图躲避最强的电击，学习的速度也必然最快。
