4.声音编码
自然界的各种声音都是由物体的振动产生的（如演奏乐器、拍击桌面），物体的振动带动了相邻的空气分子有节奏的振动，从而使周围的空气产生了疏密变化，形成疏密相间的纵波，也就形成了声波，当振动消失，空气分子很快恢复平衡状态，声波就消失了。在声波冲击到人耳的鼓膜时，通过神经系统的作用，从而产生了声音。
声波本身由于环境限制，无法直接实现记录和远距离传播，需要转换为电信号来模拟表示。通过转换的电信号，很好地保持了同声波特征的一致性，并可以最终还原出声波。转换后的电信号被称为声音信号，由于它模拟了声音的变化，又被称为模拟信号。声音信号本身是复合信号，由多种单一频率的分量信号所合成。声音信号在时间和幅度上都是连续的。在时间上的连续，表明声音信号在一段时间内具有不间断性；在幅度上的连续性表明振幅的无跳变性。声音信号的连续性特征为声音信号的数字化提供了基础。
由于计算机无法存储连续信号，声音信号需要通过采样编码转化为非连续（离散）的数字信息，在计算机中得以存储。采样编码由采样和量化两个过程组成。采样过程就是对声音信号每隔一个固定的时间间隔取一个幅度的样本值。物理学的相关理论已经证明，当采样的频率不低于分量信号中最高频率的两倍时，采样出来的离散数字信号就可以完全还原出原来的声音信号。在现实中还原出的声音信号只要控制在一定的质量范围内就能满足要求了，这时不一定需要两倍的采样频率。采样样本的幅度值，需要再经过量化过程才能在计算机中完成存储。量化的过程也可以看作一种在幅度范围上的采样过程，将幅度的最大值和最小值之间划分出若干等份，每一份都由一个数字进行表示，称为量化值，所有采样得到的数字信号就可以使用其量化值表示，量化值在计算机中可以方便地进行存储。
经过采样和量化后，声音信号就可以由一组量化的二进制数据进行表示了，这样的过程被称为A／D（模／数）转换。声音信号的还原则是声音编码的逆过程，通过将量化的数值还原出相应数字信号的幅度值，通过数学方法将离散的数字信号构造出连续的声音信号，这个过程被称为：D／A（数／模）转换。D／A还原出来的声音信号，再经过一定的装置，对应产生出声波，就可以听到一定质量的声音了。声音的编码和还原的过程如图1.18所示。
由于采样编码并不区分声音信号本身的内容，因此可以用于对所有的声音信号进行数字化。但采样编码生成的文件比较大，对一些特殊的有规则的声音（如乐音）则浪费了大量的空间。因此，对于乐音等有规律的声音，还可以利用预先制定的波表采用参数编码进行数字化，这种编码产生的数字声音占用的空间非常小。
