你可以将治疗比作训练，即使是最好的运动员，像是奥运会运动员或专业人员，都需要教练。也可以把治疗比作咨询工作，商界人士也会雇用某些专家来帮助自己。
当来访者质疑治疗师某一特定方面的可信任度时，他们通常会关注于治疗师缺失的某项关键专业背景或生活经历。此时，你可以向来访者重新定义哪些经历是有帮助的。例如，对于自己没生过孩子的治疗师，家长可能怀疑其在为人父母方面帮助他人的能力。在这种情况下，治疗师可以通过阐述自己与儿童共处的其他经历来建立可信任度（例如，照看亲属家的孩子，曾经做过老师或儿童看护）。其次，治疗师也可以指出自己通过与其他家庭的工作，已经了解了哪些教养方式有用而哪些没用。
在一些情况下，你可以让来访者了解你缺乏哪些特定领域的经历，并且讨论你会通过哪些方式来弥补这些不足。你可以指出你正在接受一位资深治疗师的督导，或者你可以邀请来访者提供他的专业看法。例如，若来访者来自不同的种族或民族，治疗师可以邀请来访者描述其成长环境里重要的文化差异。同样，可以告诉父母他们是自己孩子的专家。因此，家长对自己孩子的精确了解再加上治疗师对普通家庭的经验，二者的结合会大大提升治疗成功的可能性。
若来访者仍有怀疑，通常可以与其设定有限次数的治疗协议（一般来说三次）。这将会给治疗师时间来证明自己的能力。你可向来访者解释，如果在完成设定次数的治疗后，来访者仍是怀疑你帮助他们的能力，那么你将会很乐意将其转诊至他处。如果所设定的次数合理的话，几乎所有的来访者都会愿意给你这个机会。此时，你需要找到一个可以被快速解决的问题，通过解决这个问题来建立来访者对你的信任度。
非常重要的一点是，当你的可信任度被质疑时，你不能变得非常抵触。如果你能够用一种不带防御的、表示尊重的方式处理来访者所关心的问题，那么你实际上就正在建立可信度。然而，为了做到该点，你必须非常清楚自己可以提供什么，即便你的临床经验或生活经历有限。
