随着贸易量的扩大和商业惯例的标准化，一种新的商业组织形式（verasocieta或称“真正的公司”）开始与合伙制形式竞争，有时甚至取而代之。公司的合伙人有几个，有时有许多，经常分布在欧洲的许多城市运作。意大利人在这类组织形式中是迄今为止最杰出的，总部设在佛罗伦萨、锡耶纳、威尼斯或米兰，分支机构则设在布鲁日、伦敦、巴黎、日内瓦和其他城市。他们时常在做贸易的同时参与银行业（或次序颠倒一下）。在17世纪大的注册公司出现之前，佛罗伦萨的巴尔迪和佩鲁齐（Pemzzi）公司是世界上最大的商业组织，但两家公司都在13世纪40年代宣布破产，原因是给英格兰的爱德华三世和其他一贫如洗的君主过度发放贷款。除了各大分支机构，这些大公司还有自己的船队、武器和骡队，有些还拥有或租赁金属矿山和其他矿藏。

银行业和信贷与中世纪的商业紧密相连。早在公元12世纪，威尼斯和热那亚就建立了原始的储蓄银行。最初的设想只是纯粹的安全存款，不久，银行就开始在接到客户口头指令——书面指令较少——后，将款项从一个账户转入另一个账户。尽管法律上禁止银行向小额储户贷款，但银行仍会给予优先储户透支额度，由此创造出一种新的支付方式。这样的银行只有在主要商业中心才能找到，在意大利以外，主要是在巴塞罗那、日内瓦、布鲁日和伦敦（伦巴第街——今日伦敦金融区，名字源于在此设立办事处的大量意大利银行家）。在其他地方，私人银行家买卖交易单促进了远距离贸易。由于船运货币和金条的高风险和费用，商人们更愿意做信贷（赊欠）买卖，将收益投资在运回来的货物上，等货物卖出后再结账获利。事实上，香槟地区交易市场的所有生意都是通过信贷完成的，市场的交易一结束，未结清的余额就会以“交易文书”的形式传递到下一个市场，相当于是一种汇票。各种形式的汇票是随着商品贸易的发展而兴起的，但最终发展成纯粹的金融工具，与实际商品无任何直接的联系。
信贷得以广泛运用的另一个原因是铸币的繁杂和混乱。西欧大多数地区使用加洛林王朝的货币体系——镑、先令和便士（拉丁文是libra、solidus、denarius），表面上看似自成一体的货币在实际运用中却出现相当令人困惑的零乱复杂。譬如，热那亚的里拉（1ira）与英国的镑、法国的里弗赫（1ivre），甚至米兰或比萨的里拉是不等值的。而且，更根本性的是，镑和先令仅是账面货币，没有实际意义上的等值铸币，后者直到中世纪晚期才出现。公元ll世纪和12世纪最通用的铸币是便士，不仅大额支付不方便，而且因各方权威——国王、公爵、伯爵，甚至大修道院——竞相铸造以致出现不同的规格、重量和含银量。尺寸大一些的银币约在公元13世纪初才投入使用，但仍缺乏统一的重量和纯度。陷入税收不足窘境的统治者常常靠降低铸币的成色来拓展资源。在这种情况下，货币兑换者在交易市场和商业城市中发挥了重要作用，他们的业务就是分辨不同种类铸币的价值。
