沃尔夫冈•歌德是世界文学史上的一个长寿者，他一生共度过了八十二个春秋。他生于一七四九年，逝世于一八三二年。一九九九年，二十世纪末的最后一年是他诞生的二百五十周年，德国把这一年定为歌德年。在德国，也在世界的范围里举行了各种纪念活动，对这位伟大的诗人、思想家表达尊敬之情。
歌德生活在一个发生了一系列震撼世界的巨大历史事件的时代：七年战争、美国独立、法国革命、拿破仑的兴起和覆灭、一八三年的六月革命。他是这个动荡时代的见证人。海涅曾说过，世界想知道自己是什么样子，于是创造了歌德。歌德就成了这个世界的一面镜子。他自己在一首格言诗中这样写道：“生活在世界历史中的人，难道他应该把自己顾怜，哪怕是瞬间?谁锲而不舍把目光盯住时代，他才可以议论，才配写出诗篇。”这样在他的笔下，呈现出的是时代的风云，剖析的是人的内心世界，描绘的是万物的运动和发展，探索的是生活的真谛。创作的冲动，无法遏止的激情，穷究底蕴的永远追求，伴随着他漫长的一生。
