“我发誓，抓住你非得……”
她的后半句话没说出来，因为她弯下腰，憋足了劲，用笤帚盲目横扫床下，一时喘不上气来，结果把猫儿打跑了。
“这孩子从来让人捉摸不透！”
她走向敞开的门，站在门口，望着园子里的西红柿蔓和杂草。汤姆不在那儿。她抬高嗓门，朝远处嚷道：

鞭子已经举起，形势危急万分……
“天哪！姨妈，看那是谁来了！”
老妇人连忙提着裙摆转身，危险消逝了。男孩拔脚逃走，爬上高高的木篱笆墙，消失得无影无踪。
他的波利姨妈惊诧了片刻，接着爆发出一阵温和的笑声。
“该死的孩子。他的鬼把戏玩了一套又一套，我怎么总是上当？唉，老傻瓜都是大傻瓜，老狗学不会新本事，这谚语没错。可是，这孩子两天来玩的花招就没个重样，谁知道他下一步又要耍什么把戏？看来他懂得我的忍耐性有多大，刚好不让我发作。他还会逗得我忍俊不禁，这就把他的罪过一笔勾销了，我怎么也不会下手打他。说句大实话，老天在上，我没有对这孩子尽到责任。那本好书上说，棍棒之下出英才。我是既有罪又遭罪，这我心里明白。他满脑袋鬼点子，可我拿他有什么办法！我亲妹妹死后，留下这孩子，可怜的娃娃，我哪能铁起心肠打他呢？我每次放过他，就觉得良心受谴责；可我每次打他，又觉得这颗老心脏要碎了。唉，就像经文上说的，男人是女人生的，没几天日子好过，却总是找麻烦。我打赌，这话没错。今儿下午他要逃学，我有义务教他改错。明天惩罚他。星期六，别的孩子都在享受休假，逼他干活真够他受的。可他最讨厌的就是干活。我得对他尽点义务，要不这孩子就毁了。”
汤姆当然逃学了。他玩得非常开心，几乎没按时回来帮黑人孩子吉姆干活。晚饭前，吉姆正在劈第二天要用的柴。他总算及时回来把自己当天的冒险经历讲给吉姆听，结果，吉姆只干了四分之三的活计。汤姆的同母异父弟弟锡德是个性情平静的孩子，他已经干完自己捡木片的活儿了。他既不冒险，也不讨人厌。

这本书中的故事大部分是真实的。其中一部分是我本人的经历，其余事情发生在我的同学们中间。哈克·芬是根据真人描写的，汤姆·索亚也有生活原型，不过并不是取自一个人。他是根据我认识的三个孩子塑造的，可以说他是个像盖房子一样堆砌而成的人物。
故事中有奇怪的迷信做法，当时在西部的孩子们和奴隶们中间颇为流行，当然啦，是在三四十年之前。
虽然这本书主要是写给孩子们看的，不过，我希望成人们看了它，也能勾起对童年美好的回忆，想起当初自己的感觉和行为，为自己昔日偶然产生的怪诞念头和滑稽言谈感到会心的一笑。
