《中国时尚产业蓝皮书（2014-2015）》：
（五）东京
东京是日本第一大都市，作为五大时尚之都中唯一的一个东方城市，东京的时尚不仅蕴含着东方的气质，其多元化的发展也领导着现代时尚的新概念：时尚不仅是服装，也包括了生活的各个方面。
当代时尚产业的范围已经不再局限于服装行业，而是包括生活中方方面面的时尚设计。在日本通产省关于文化创意产业的范围分类中，日本的时尚产业包括时尚设计和化妆品。从对世界时尚的影响力来看，东京最具特色的是服装产业和电子产业，因此从这两个行业的发展可以看出东京时尚产业发展的基本状况。另外，日本是政策导向型的产业发展模式，所以产业的发展受到政策的影响很深，政策的变动也成为影响东京时尚产业发展的重要因素之一。因此，最能代表东京时尚业的服装产业和电子产业在不同时期内的政策导向下发展，也成为东京时尚产业时期划分的基本依据和时间节点。
1955-1964年，东京处于战后起步阶段的出口导向时期。1965~1974年是内需市场扩大时期；1975-1984年是东京时尚产业开始形成的时期；1985～1991年是生产产业转移时期。这一时期日本的加工业开始向国外转移，但是设计基本上还是留在日本本土。1992年以后，日本的经济泡沫破灭，经济发展面临难题，但时尚产业发展却基本成熟，转向了服务型时期。
东京近年来正以一个不断吸收、发布新信息的时尚中心的姿态在飞速发展，各种时装发布会召开极为频繁。东京服饰的主要特征是以全新概念诠释穿着，将人体视为一个特定物品，将面料视为包装材料，在人体上创造出美好的包装视觉效果。东京的设计师认为时装是“文化的工具”，他们擅长于挖掘日本及东方传统中的精华。在结构及形式上，他们吸取并熟练掌握和服和东方服饰中的扭结、缠绕、悬垂手法；对微妙色彩系统中的茶色、表色和灰色运用自如，缔造了新的东方时尚。东京时装的代表品牌Kenzo是由日本知名设计师高田贤三一手创办的品牌，如今已经归由世界知名的奢侈品集团LVMH公司管理。即使如此，Ken：o身上仍带有与众不同的东方风情。色彩魔术师的高田贤三擅长运用各种亮丽的色彩，对花朵的诠释非常到位，让不同的花朵图案盛开在每一件服装上是高田贤三的拿手好戏，有些妖娆却又颇有含蓄的东瀛风格。
东京之所以能成为时尚之都，与一些早年在海外成名的日本设计师有很大的关系。高田贤三、三宅一生、山本耀司等一批设计师以独特的东方风格在巴黎取得了成功，从而吸引了来自西方世界的关注。如果仅就东京时装产业一方面来说，东京在世界五大时尚之都中的地位似乎不如其他四大都市，但东京时尚电子产品产业在世界上的影响力，加强了东京作为世界时尚都市之一的地位。日本自身的经济实力和消费能力，使东京成为世界经济的焦点地带，也是世界上经济和消费最发达的城市之一，这些条件都奠定了东京时尚之都的地位。此外，东京时尚教育事业之发达，以及从事时尚产业的人数之多，也提高了东京作为世界时尚之都的地位。
如果说五大时尚之都都有自己鲜明的特点，那么东京最大的特点就是其时装的独特风格，电子产品的时尚设计，引领着全球年轻人的时尚消费。东京在五大时尚之都中的个性特点更体现着当今时尚产业的新方向——时尚不再仅仅是传统的服饰形象，而且已经渗透到当代都市生活的更多方面。
