Author Description

杜鲁门·卡波特（TrumanCapote，1924-1984），美国当代著名作家。1924年出生于新奥尔良，幼年身世坎坷，11岁开始文学创作。1958年成名作《蒂凡尼的早餐》问世，奠定了“战后一代最完美的作家”地位。1966年代表作《冷血》出版，2005年遗作《夏日十字路口》问世。
1984年8月25日，卡波特因用药过度，猝死于洛杉矶友人家中，留下这样一句话：“我是个酒鬼。我是个吸毒鬼。我是个同性恋者。我是个天才。即使如此，我还是可以成为一个圣人。“

《蒂凡尼的早餐》于一九五八年春由兰登书屋出版，并于一九六一年由派拉蒙公司拍成电影。书的评价相当高，创下了非常大的销量，但现在一提到《蒂凡尼的早餐》，很多人眼前首先浮现出来的，可能却是电影主演奥黛丽·赫本的容颜、考究的纪梵希黑礼服，以及亨利·曼西尼作曲的给人深刻印象的电影配乐。电影虽然与原作差异很大，但它完成了一个颇为精致的爱情喜剧，在商业上也获得了巨大成功。现在很多人在读书之前已经看过电影，因而会不知不觉地把奥黛丽·赫本叠加在主人公郝莉·戈莱特利身上。这对小说也许是个困扰，因为作者杜鲁门·卡波特显然并不是把郝莉·戈莱特利设定为奥黛丽·赫本那种类型的女子。据说，当卡波特听到将由赫本来主演电影时，曾表现出很大的不快。或许他认为郝莉身上那种惊世骇俗的奔放、在性上的开放，以及纯洁的放荡感，这位女星本来并不具备。
作为日文版译者，我希望书的封面尽可能不要使用电影画面，因为那样难免会限制读者的想象力。郝莉·戈莱特利这个女人，到底是什么样子呢？跟随故事的进展，每一位读者都在想象中自由驰骋，才是阅读此类小说的一大乐趣。郝莉·戈莱特利恐怕是杜鲁门·卡波特在小说中创造出来的最有魅力的人，如果把她简单地同化为一位女演员——姑且不论当时的奥黛丽’赫本也很有魅力——我觉得实在太可惜了。
另外，故事的叙述者“我”身上，毋庸置疑叠加着作者卡波特的身影和灵魂。与乔治·佩帕德那种健壮、金发的纯粹美式英俊青年给人的印象有着很大的不同。这位住在楼上公寓里的男子，来自乡下，脸上还残留着少年的痕迹，敏感，还有几分倦怠——郝莉感知到了他身上的中性特质和漂泊不定的孤立感，正因如此，她才会信任他，和他成为朋友。如果对方换成乔治·佩帕德，故事必然迥然不同——也的确迥然不同了。
尽管如此，电影自有其有趣之处，它将彼一时代的纽约风光描绘得美丽而欢快。所以，在这里就不和电影进行比较、说长论短了吧。我想说的是，如果可能，希望大家尽量与电影拉开距离来阅读和欣赏这个故事。
不过话说回来，难道就没有人愿意尽可能地忠实于原作，将《蒂凡尼的早餐》再拍一次电影吗？比起重拍（并非特别有此必要）《惊魂记》或《电话谋杀案》等作品来，这个做法要明智得多。但下一次由谁来演郝莉·戈莱特利呢……实在想不出具体的名字，真是很为难。还请大家看书的时候，想一想什么样的演员适合郝莉。
卡波特于一九二四年出生于新奥尔良。他在母亲的老家亚拉巴马州乡下度过了少年时代，十几岁的时候去了纽约。一九四一年至一九四四年，他在《纽约客》杂志做小工。他怀着成为作家的志向在杂志社打杂，如此这般度过了《蒂凡尼的早餐》的背景时代。后来，他在诗人罗伯特·弗罗斯特的朗诵会上惹了一点麻烦，结果被（（纽约客》解雇。本书中描写的主人公“我”的心境，无疑与当时卡波特的颇为相近。
结束《纽约客》的工作之后，他在杂志上发表了，成为更加个人化、更加人性化的行为。事实一度支离破碎，通过杜鲁门·卡波特这部缜密的滤器而再度成形。卡波特将这部作品称为“纪实小说”，他所掌握的“第二期”的新文体，成为写作此书极为有效的武器。
这部作品为卡波特带来了空前的声名。从作品根源处释放出的力量、致密到完美的人物描写，几乎令每一个人折服。这又是一本堪称“现代经典”的作品。通过《冷血》，这位驱使着流丽文体的时尚都市派作家，终于变身为不折不扣的真正作家。但是，这本书在带给卡波特声名的同时，也从他身上夺去了很多活力。卡波特不遗余力地利用了那些素材，那些素材也不遗余力地利用、消耗了他。卡波特用他的灵魂交换了那些鲜活的素材——这么说也许太过极端，但我总是忍不住认为，也许在某个隐秘、幽深的地方发生了这样的交易。见证两名杀人犯被处决，使卡波特受到了沉重的打击，他似乎再也没有从这一打击中站起来。
至少就虚构作品而言，他在二十世纪五十年代所表现出的夺目光辉再也不曾重现。简言之，他不能写小说了。他于一九八。年发表的短篇集《变色龙的音乐》，老实说有一种生拉硬扯般的不自然感，他去世后发表的丑闻之作《祈祷得回报》也终未完稿。无论哪一本，作为卡波特的作品都不能令人满意。

主人公“我”相信郝莉·戈莱特利曾经拥有的“纯洁”这一羽翼，并决定一直相信下去。像他一样，我们也相信《蒂凡尼的早餐》中所描绘的美好而变幻无常的世界。说这是童话也好。不过，真正优秀的童话，能够以它独有的方式，给予我们生活下去所需要的力量、温暖与希望。
而小说家杜鲁门·卡波特，则用实例鲜明地告诉我们，所谓优秀的童话到底是什么。
