前传：
1949-1975蒋介石台湾政治地理：62岁，转进台湾。26年生涯，34处行馆。
1949年岁末，刚过了耳顺之年的蒋介石丢掉了大好天下，以“亡国待罪之身”，与长子蒋经国来到台湾这个蕞尔小岛。国之将亡、仓皇辞庙，蒋介石在岁暮国破之际，看似一派轻松，面临的却是隔海解放军凌厉的攻势，还要应付美国的逼退压力，看着一切不确定的未来，气氛颇为凄凉。
早于1948年即赴美争取美援未归的宋美龄，对下野后避居奉化溪口的蒋，极为担心当地安全，多次去电要求蒋介石离开，甚至希望蒋经国能从旁劝说。蒋介石幕僚周宏涛在个人自传则曾记载，虽然蒋介石与马歇尔不合，但宋美龄却与马歇尔颇为交好，周宏涛转述，老蒋另一名幕僚董显光的说法，宋美龄曾告知，“马歇尔答应她，在最危险的时候到美国去！”。另有一说，宋美龄在49年风雨飘摇之际，曾建议蒋介石流亡欧洲。不过蒋介石对这些要求始终没有松口，而是不断去函催促宋美龄返国。老蒋日后也说，当时未选择出国考察，实在是“没脸见人”，“宁愿待在国内待罪”。
但据事后考证，蒋经国当时已在安排预案，如果情势恶化，一是从宜兰外海再流亡他国，或是运台黄金是否要再转到菲律宾储备等问题。但其时包括菲律宾在内，都已向美国直言拒绝蒋介石流亡的可能性。
是年12月23日，平安夜前夕，留在内地转战西南地区的的原在中国远征军中出名的抗战将军李弥再被击败，曲靖被解放，西南战况失利，国民党在大陆军事至此完全失败，眼看国民党大军，“作战而消灭者十之二，为投机而降服者十之二，为避战图逃而灭亡者十之五，其他运来台湾及各岛整训存留者不过十之一而已”。蒋介石只有承认，“过去一年间，党务、政治、经济、军事、外交、教育，已因胡宗南逃避琼岛之故，彻底失败而绝望矣”。
“为人唾弃，为世讥讽，耻辱悲惨，于兹为甚”，这是蒋介石在1949年给自己下的评语。寝食难安的蒋介石当时甚至在日记中如此记载：“昨晚冬至，夜间梦在新建未漆之楼梯，努力挣扎爬上梯底时已力竭气衰而醒。若此为预兆，前途艰危可知，而成功亦可卜也。”
这个当头，蒋介石带着蒋经国来到日月潭边风景秀丽的涵碧楼，与儿孙共度耶诞，回想1946年到台视察光复周年的风光，与宋美龄在涵碧楼的顾盼自雄，还因此主动延后返回台北的行程。这次故地重游，虽有布置圣诞树、孙辈嬉戏、交换礼物的喜悦，父子共游潭水涟漪、环山幽翠的日月潭，步林道、观日出，甚至在船上网到一条近两公尺长的大鱼。却是夕阳无限好，丝毫化解不了老蒋心中苦闷。
蒋介石在1949年12月31日日记中称，“在此重大失败之中，亡命台湾犹有自由生活，殊觉自慰，故频谢天父与基督洪恩不置也。”；但也说“一年悲剧与惨状，实不忍反省亦不敢回顾”。蒋经国也在同日记载，“决定国家生死存亡的一年，就在今夜过去了。流光逝水，马齿徒增，仆仆风尘，自问所作何事？往者不忍回忆，来者更必艰难。”
朝鲜战争的爆发，客观上挽救了蒋家之朝。蒋介石在台湾站稳脚步，涵碧楼又成了他处理党务到政务、国际外交、两岸互动，甚至个人反省检讨的地方。甚至70年代，台湾被逐出联合国之际，身体明显恶化的蒋介石也在涵碧楼停留50多天，思考国与家的未来。由此可知，作为蒋介石头号行馆的涵碧楼，一如其他行馆，并非单纯的度假散心之地，或老蒋独占欲发作。全台一座座行馆，其实如同老蒋各地应变机要之地，既可保有军事反击应变机动性，又能充当临时指挥所，让蒋介石得以运筹帷幄。
这些行馆，有高山之巅的达观亭、松雪楼，有台湾最南端的垦丁宾馆，有在北横老林深处的栖兰行馆，有外岛的澎湖、金门，足迹几乎踏遍台湾每个角落。加上环境清幽、隐蔽性高，还能避开扰人的官场，让喜爱派头的蒋介石伉俪能有私人空间与高宾深谈，既特殊，又不显得僵化呆版；也因此才留下众多历史记忆供后人凭吊。
