《唐山大地震》首次发表是在唐山大地震10周年的1986年，刊载于《解放军文艺》。这篇报告文学发表后即产生了巨大的反响，同时也以图书形式出版。其后的24年间，这本书多次再版，还先后被译为日、英、韩、法等国文字，并被美国的一些大学列为新闻写作的教学参考书，部分章节被收入香港的中学语文教材。
此次再版，我们在附录中增加了作者近年所写的一些相关文章和评论，包括作者在汶川大地震时所写的评论，从中可以看到作者今天对地震和自然灾害的更加深入的思考，对广大读者也有启示。
自然界的巨灾，是人们不愿看到，而又无法回避和必须承受的。近年来全球大地震频发，我国更在2008年和2010年接连发生了四川汶川大地震和青海玉树大地震，造成人们的生命和财产的巨大损失。地震再次震动了全国人民的心。正如作者在本书的“21世纪新版序”中所说： “本书所记录的历史事实，时而被人淡忘，时而又被突然提起。被淡忘的日子，它本应该记忆；而被突然提起，却每每在不堪回首之时。”在惨烈的灾害后，本书又再次被人们提起，人们以各种形式（电影、电视、图书、文章）回顾和反思灾害中的人性。
我们希望人们永远不要淡忘这些灾难，在给予受灾的人们更多关爱的同时，对自然灾害保持高度的警觉；特别是要加强巨灾预警机制，理性地提高防灾救灾的能力，以更有效地保障生命。

Author Description

钱钢，上海大学和平与发展研究中心研究员，香港大学新闻及传媒研究中心研究员；曾为《解放军报》记者、《中国减灾报》执行编委、《三联生活周刊》执行主编、中央电视台《新闻调查》栏目总策划、《南方周末》常务副主编。著有《唐山大地震》、《大清海军与李鸿章》（原名《海葬》）、《留美幼童》（与胡劲草合作）等著作。

历史将永远铭记地球的这一个坐标：东经118.2度，北纬39.6度。
人类将永远铭记历史的这一个时刻：公元1976年7月28日，北京时间凌晨3时42分53.8秒。
仅仅在一秒钟以前，地球的表面似乎还是平静的。在东经118.2度、北纬39.6度——中国河北省唐山市，一切都和往日一样，夜阑人寂，大街上几乎看不见行人；开滦矿务局唐山矿的高高的井架上，天轮还在以惯常的速度旋转；新落成的开滦医院七层大楼，透出几处宁静而柔和的灯光。整座城市在安宁地熟睡。某机关宿舍中，一位名叫蒋红春的女中学生，在屋里打完驱赶蚊虫的“滴滴涕”，刚刚回到床上；河北矿冶学院干部陆延麟担心有雨，刚刚起来收下晾在窗外的衣服；火车站服务员张克英正和一位工友商量买夜餐的事；一位名叫刘勋的大夫，因有急诊，刚刚披上外衣走出屋子……
谁也不曾想到，若干年来，唐山市脚下的地壳正在发生着可怕的变动。唐山和唐山以西地区，上地幔和下地壳的岩浆和热物质向上地壳加速迁移，引起垂直作用力。地壳运动产生的强大地应力长期集中造成的巨大弹性应变能，正在岩石中积聚着、贮蕴着，岩石痛苦地支撑着自己，直至岩石强度被突破的那个灾难性时刻。7月28日凌晨3时42分，唐山市地下的岩石突然崩溃了！断裂了！
