Book Abstract

由于过多的人搬进大森林，森林里动物的生活环境都被破坏了，所以爸也就不想在这继续居住下去。爸喜欢那些能够和野生动物和谐相处的地方。他喜欢母鹿保护着小鹿儿，从幽暗的灌木丛中警觉地守望着他；更喜欢看着胖乎乎的黑熊缓慢地移到树间草丛里寻找野草莓充饥。
在漫长的冬季夜晚，爸向妈详细地描述了有关西部地区的景色。
在西部地区里，平坦的土地遍布高大的树木和肥沃的牧草，动物们就像生活在一个天然的大牧场里，可以无拘无束地走来走去，品尝着肥美的青草。但是，那里却没有耕种的农民，只生活着一些印第安人。
冬季季末的一天，爸和妈商量：“我想我们去西部生活比较好，你觉得呢？有人想买咱们这间小木屋，如果现在卖，应该能有个不错的价钱！有了这些钱，我们就能在西部重新建造个新家了。”
“噢，查尔斯，我们现在就必须离开这里吗？”妈问。
这时候，冬天的寒冷还没有退去，外面一片冰天雪地，暖烘烘的小屋越发让人觉得舒服。
“我们要想在今年年内安顿下来的话，就不能再拖着了！”爸回答，“如果河里的冰融化了，我们就没法穿过密西西比河了。”
就这样，爸卖掉了小木屋和家里的母牛、小牛。他把一些胡桃木弯成弓形，固定在马车后车板正上方，妈帮他把白色的帆布舒展开罩在上面，做好了结实的车篷。
天还没亮，妈就将玛丽和罗拉唤醒起床。借着炉火和蜡烛微弱的光线，妈给两个女儿洗干净小脸，并梳好漂亮的小辫子，给她俩换上暖和的衣服。在红法兰绒长衣外加上毛裙子和厚厚的外衣，穿上毛袜子，还带上了暖和的红色毛线手套。
小木屋里所有零散的生活用具都被收拾到马车上，但睡床、桌椅等一些笨重的家具都留了下来。因为等有了新家，爸会重新做一套更好的家具。
地面上覆盖着浅浅的一层冰雪。天还没有亮，夜幕笼罩着寒冷的大地，透过稀疏的星光，一排排树木顶着光秃秃的枝丫僵直地耸立在地面上。天空泛起阴沉沉的青色，昏暗的森林里，出现了一辆闪着灯光的马车，原来是罗拉的爷爷、奶奶、叔叔、姑姑和堂兄妹们来向他们道别了。
玛丽和罗拉还迷迷糊糊的，只是紧紧地抱着布娃娃，不知道说什么好。堂兄妹们也呆呆地站在旁边没有说话。奶奶、婶婶和姑姑把她俩拥人怀中轻轻吻了一下，接着把她们紧紧地抱了起来。
爸把猎枪挂在车棚内侧靠上的地方，子弹袋子坠在枪下面，这样安置是为了驾驶马车的爸可以轻易取到猎枪。另外为了避免路上磕碰，他们把装小提琴的盒子挤在两个枕头中间。
叔叔帮着爸牵来马匹套在马车上。所有的亲戚都和玛丽、罗拉亲吻告别。爸把玛丽和罗拉抱到马车后面厚厚的棉被上。妈则由爸搀扶着上了车棚前坐稳，奶奶伸手托起小凯莉递到妈怀里。
爸纵身上车，坐在妈的旁边，牛头犬杰克机灵地钻到马车的下面。就这样，马儿载着罗拉一家离开了生活多年的小木屋。小木屋紧紧关闭着窗户，就好像不忍心看这离别的一幕。它孤单地伫立在围栏内的两颗高大的橡树后面，那是曾经在夏日里为玛丽和罗拉制造了一个巨大的绿色屋顶，让她们尽情玩耍的地方。这是罗拉和玛丽最后一次看到大森林里的小木屋了。
爸向罗拉保证，等到了西部地区，就让罗拉看看“颇普斯”。
“什么是‘颇普斯’啊？”罗拉缠着爸问。
“‘颇普斯’就是有着棕色皮肤的印第安小宝宝啊！”爸笑着回答。
马车载着罗拉一家在雪地里跑了很长一段路，最后到了一个叫做贝宾的城镇。玛丽和罗拉虽然也曾来过这儿一次，但现在看来仍觉得十分陌生。所有的店铺门都紧闭着，树桩被雪覆盖，外面没有小孩子玩耍。在树桩之间，只有两三个穿着长靴、带着厚厚的毛皮帽子、套着明亮的格子大衣的男人在那儿观望着。
妈、玛丽和罗拉在车蓬里面吃着美味的面包和蜜饯，疲倦的马儿则大口大口地吞食着口袋里的玉米，爸抽空到一家店铺，买了一些迁徙途中需要的生活物品。他们不能在这个镇子停留太久，因为当天他们必须穿过冰封的大河。
巨大的河流平展地延伸着，覆盖一层薄雪的冰面一直连到银灰色的天际。河面的冰层上有许多马车经过留下的坑洼痕迹，已经辨不清它们的去向了，蔓延到遥远的远方。
爸沿着那些马车印，把马车驾驶到河面上。可以听到马蹄踩着雪的清脆声音，车轮也跟着咿咿呀呀作响。他们渐渐远离了短暂停留过的小镇，那镇上最高的店铺看起来也只有豆粒大小了。从车篷里向外望去，四下里静悄悄的，没有一点声响，静得让人感到有一丝恐惧。罗拉隐隐有些不安，还好爸就坐在车篷前面赶着马儿.杰克也在车后紧跟着。罗拉知道，只要有爸和杰克在，没有什么可以伤害得了她。
又过了很长时间，马车终于驶过河面，爬上了一个土坡。土坡附近可以看到一片接着一片的树丛，在树丛中隐约有几座小木屋。这时罗拉才感觉舒服多了。
没有人住在那些稀疏的小木屋里，它们是用来露营的。屋子里只有巨大的壁炉和紧挨着墙壁的睡床，让人感觉空荡荡的。
