我们还没有告诉你真正的流行病学是什么，那么现在马上开始。Alderson称流行病学包含4种不同类型的研究：描述、假设检验、干预和方法学。描述性研究这样提问题：“谁最容易患艾滋病？”或“军团病暴发有哪些共同之处？”或“住在高压电线附近的孩子和贫血的发生有关联吗？”这种类型的研究：①按照现状看世界而不试图改变；②依靠已有数据，如人口普查；③通过大样本人群调查搜集信息。
一旦我们获得（或者最起码认为我们获得）事物间相关的描述，我们就可以提一些更具体的问题或进入假设检验阶段。例如，如果我们怀疑乳腺癌的发病可能与脂肪摄人有关。我们就可以查看低脂饮食国家的癌症流行程度是否降低.以及流行程度是否与脂肪摄人有关。同样，如果认为军团病是由冷却系统中的滞水引起的，我们可以在接到暴发信息的第一时间检验水的纯净度。我们再次不干扰世界而简单地搜集比较集中的信息——能够支持或驳倒一个特定假设的信息。
