计算机网络是信息社会的基础，它使得信息的收集、存储、加工和传播不再是互相分离的几个部分，而是一个有机整体。原始信息可以从网络的任何一个终端输入，经过处理软件的加工，存储在网络数据库中，并按需要分发到网络的任何一个地方。人们只需要简单地敲击一下键盘或点击一下鼠标，便能获得各种信息，而不用了解这些信息是存放在本地还是在千里之外。
