当我最初应邀撰写本书时，我立刻想到此书应该具有坚实的科学性和温暖的人性，具有事实精确性和智力启发性。它可能以这样的方式来揭示社会心理学——提供重要社会现象的实时概要，也包括科学家是怎样发现和解释这些现象的。它应该是相当全面的，但也会激发学生的思考——促使他们去探索，去分析，并把这些规则同日常生活联系起来。
如何选择材料来对一个学科做相当全面的介绍——既要足够长以便容纳丰富的叙述，也要足够清晰以使要点不至于被淹没其中。我一直努力使我所呈现的理论和研究结果既不会对本科生来说过于深奥，也不会和单纯的社会学或心理学课程重复。相反我注重那些能使社会心理学融合到自由艺术的知识传统中的材料。通过传授名著。哲学和科学，自由主义的教育理念拓展了我们的思维和觉知，并把我们从现存的束缚中解放出来。社会心理学能够达到这些目标。很多社会心理学的本科生并不主修心理学，实际上所有人都将从事其他职业。这本书把重点放在和人类有关的重要话题上，这样既可以为心理学专业的学生提供基本知识，同时也能激发所有学生的兴趣，并对他们有所裨益。
