1934年12月13日，《父与子》第一个连环漫画故事《糟糕的家庭作业》问世时，作者奥塞尔的儿子克里斯蒂安年仅三岁。这本连载于《柏林画报》的长篇连环漫画，溢满了奥塞尔的爱子之情，通篇都是两者的真实写照，可以说是世界上流传最广的亲情漫画。

那一年春天，乌尔施泰恩出版社的编辑库尔特·库森贝格需要为《柏林画报》寻找一位画长篇连载幽默连环漫画的画家，先后试了32位，都不能让他满意，直到漫画家埃里希·奥塞尔（ErichOhser）被提上名单。没多久，编辑部一致肯定了奥塞尔的《父与子》。

埃里希·奥塞尔，1903年3月18日生于德国格兰特山区阿尔多夫附近的翁特盖滕格林村，他的父亲为人正直，母亲则善良开朗。奥塞尔四岁时，父亲调动工作，全家搬到了福格兰特山区的首府卜劳恩。奥塞尔家境不富裕，但勤奋好学，常受到老师表扬。1917年，奥塞尔以优异的成绩从公立学校毕业。由于家庭经济的原因，他的学业未能继续下去。这一年，他被安排去学钳工，开始了持续三年的学徒生涯。虽然这段时间过得很艰辛，但是奥塞尔依然保有对艺术的热情。学徒生涯结束后，奥塞尔说服了父母，踏上了去莱比锡艺术学院的求学之路。

1921至1926年这五年就学期间，奥塞尔头两年都在一边打工一边学习。十九岁那年，奥塞尔在老家卜劳恩市举办了人生的第一次画展。这次画展让他的作品在当地获得高度评价，也点燃了奥塞尔的创作热情。此后他频繁参加各类绘画比赛，并且几乎每次都能捧回大奖。

1930年10月18日，奥塞尔和同学玛丽加尔德·班塞尔在柏林完婚，次年儿子克里斯蒂安出生。1921年到1933年是他生命中最快乐的时期，爱情、家庭、事业、友谊事事得意。这同时也是他创作高峰期，他发表了大量的幽默画。

1933年前，奥塞尔发表了政治漫画讽刺希特勒，从而被纳粹政府认定为政治左倾并限制其公开发表作品。《柏林画报》为此与当局交涉，奥塞尔终于被获准以埃·奥·卜劳恩的笔名发表非政治性的绘画作品，这个名字从此闻名于世。

《父与子》一经问世，便产生了巨大影响。每一幅作品，都充满了生活的智慧与幽默，把人与人之间朴实纯真的情感表现得淋漓尽致，深沉而真挚，深入人心。第三帝国时期，战火不断，硝烟弥漫，令人窒息的白色恐怖笼罩整个国家，《父与子》犹如荒漠中的一片人性绿洲，温暖了德国。

1937年，乌尔施泰恩出版社将《父与子》结集出版。整本漫画没有一句对话，却通俗易懂，引人发笑。《父与子》早在20世纪30年代就传入我国，当时连鲁迅、丰子恺等大家都推崇备至。

然而，在纳粹政府统治下的德国，像奥塞尔这样的艺术家却没那么幸运。1944年3月28日，奥塞尔被指控犯“反国家言论罪”，未经传讯便遭到逮捕。开庭前夕，知道事态已无转机的奥塞尔，于4月6日在牢中留下一封遗书后自杀身亡。

一位艺术巨匠就此离开人间。他的艺术生涯虽然短暂，但却给德国、给世界留下了宝贵的作品。

奥塞尔在给妻子的遗书中写道：“……我为德国而画……还望把他（克里斯蒂安）抚养成人。带着幸福的微笑，我去了。”
