1949年的纽约，曼哈顿一间没有暖气的公寓里，三十三岁的穷作家海莲，偶然看到一则伦敦旧书店的广告，凭着一股莽撞劲，她开始给这个伦敦地址写信。这一写，就写了二十年。
很多年后，她和这家书店的通信集，被称为“爱书人的圣经”，不断演绎。而那家书店的地址——查令十字街84号，已经成为全球爱书人之间的一个暗号。
三十多年来，人们读它、写它、演它，在这段传奇里彼此问候，相互取暖。

Author Description

海莲·汉芙（Helene Hanff）1916 年 4 月 15 日出生于费城。绝大部份的岁月都在曼哈顿岛渡过，一生潦倒困窘。汉芙生前从事的工作多是为剧团修审剧本；并曾为若干电视影集撰写剧本。主要的著作有：日记体的纽约市导览《我眼中的苹果》（Apple of my Eye, 1977）、半自传的《别脚混剧圈》（Underfoot in Show Business, 1980）、传记《Q的传奇》（Q’s Legacy, 1985）、《纽约来鸿》（Letter From New York, 1992）以及一系列以少年为对象的美国历史读物。1997 年，汉芙因肺炎病逝于纽约市。《查令十字路84号》于 1970 年首版问世，旋即被爱书人奉为经典；英国版则于次年出版，同样在英伦地区引起回响。1971 年 6 月 17 日，汉芙应英国出版商之邀，终于飞抵伦敦，实现了她长年以来的夙愿。后来她将自己在伦敦盘桓一个月余的日记付梓（The Dutchesss of Bloomsbury Street, 1971）。

陈建铭，1965 年出生。与汉芙一样：喜欢信件和二手书。曾任职于诚品书店古书区。

关于改编
一九七五年，BBC决定把《查令十字街84号》搬上荧屏；六年之后，素有盛名的英国戏剧界决定把它改编为舞台剧，上演三月不衰；再过六年，此书又被改编成电影，由著名演员安妮·班克劳夫特及安东尼·霍普金斯领衔主演，电影介绍中称，“这部片子旨在反映两种爱情，一是汉芙对书的激情之爱，二是她对德尔的精神之爱”，终于在书缘与情缘之间系了根红线。

生活中发生了一桩小小的笑话。一位朋友在英国，按照我的介绍，某一天逛伦敦的书店一条街——查令十字街，并到84号朝圣。奈何那里已经改为一家酒吧，只是在门边挂个铜牌，上书“查令十字街84号，马克斯与科恩书店的旧址，因为海莲·汉芙的书而闻名天下”。收银小姐看着她笑问：“为那本书来的吧？”她只好狠狠地点一瓶红酒，并为我买了期待已久的书《查令十字街84号》，然后寄往北京，还兴冲冲地先用数码相机将书拍了照mail过来，让我预热一下。结果，不幸的很，这本书在大英帝国的邮政系统兜了一个圈子，又回到了朋友的手上——她将收件人与寄件人的位置弄颠倒了。
其实以我的英文修养，肯定啃不动原版书，但对于这本书，还是希望能保留一本，因为它被誉为“爱书人的《圣经》”。
这本书讲的就是一个纽约爱书人通过书信往来在伦敦一家古旧书店(书名即是这家书店的地址)淘书并建立深厚友谊的故事。
