Author Description

欧内斯特·海明威（Ernest Hemingway，1899-1961），美国小说家，被誉为“20世纪最伟大的作家之一”。他是两次世界大战的亲历者。1961年用猎枪自杀。滑雪、狩猎、捕鱼、看斗牛是他生活的一部分，也是他的作品的背景与底色。他的作品，富于阳刚之气，行文简约，同时传达出极其细腻的、高度审美的感受力，对20世纪的英美小说产生了巨大的影响。代表作有《太阳照常升起》《永别了，武器》《乞力马扎罗的雪》《丧钟为谁而鸣》《老人与海》等。1953年获普利策奖，1954年获诺贝尔文学奖。
李文俊，原籍广东中山，1930年生于上海，长期任职于中国社会科学院外文所，曾任《世界文学》主编。着有《福克纳评传》《寻找与寻见》《行人寥落的小径》等。译有卡夫卡的《变形记》，福克纳的《喧哗与骚动》《我弥留之际》《去吧，摩西》《押沙龙，押沙龙！》《福克纳随笔》，托·斯·艾略特的《大教堂凶杀案》，卡森·麦卡勒斯的《伤心咖啡馆之歌》，塞林格的《九故事》等。近年亦译少儿文学作品，如伯内特夫人的《小公主》《小爵爷》《秘密花园》，米尔恩的《小熊维尼阿噗》《阿噗角的小屋》以及辛·赖伦特的《想念梅姨》等。2005年被中国翻译工作者协会授为“资深翻译家”。2011年获翻译文化终身成就奖。

“不过要对付一条真的很大很大的鱼，你现在的精力是不是还够呢？”
“我想还行吧。再说还有许多诀窍可以用呢。”
“咱们把东西搬回去吧，”孩子说。“我还要带上撒网去逮沙丁鱼呢。”
他们从船上取了一应用具。老人把桅杆扛上肩，孩子抱起木箱，里面盛着盘成圈状的编得结结实实的棕绳，还拿上抓钩和装有木把的渔叉。盛鱼饵的小盒就塞在船尾暗处，那儿还有根棍子，是用来制伏已给拖到船边却还不老实的大鱼的。按说谁也不会偷老人的东西，但是帆和粗钓绳应该拿回屋里去，露水容易使它们糟朽，尽管他深信本地无人会偷他的东西，但是随便把一只抓钩一把渔叉留在船里总是个不必要的诱惑。
他们一起顺着上坡路走到老人的棚屋前，穿过开着的门走进去。老人把桅杆跟卷起的帆支在墙上，孩子把箱子和其他东西放在一边。桅杆都快跟棚屋整个房间一般长了。棚屋是用当地人称作guano的王棕靠近花苞处的新鲜叶子搭成的，里面有一张床、一张桌子和一把椅子，泥地上还留出块空地好用木炭烹煮食物。用压平的一层层叶筋坚韧的棕叶编扎成的墙上贴有一张叫《耶稣圣心》的彩色图片和另一张叫《科夫雷童贞圣母》的图片。这些都是老伴的遗物。原来墙上还有一幅老伴的着色照片，但是让他取下来了，因为他见到遗照会感到愈加孤单的，现在照片压在了架子上他那堆换洗衬衫的最底下。
“吃的东西你有的吧？”那孩子问。
“一小罐黄米饭，有一点鱼当菜。你也吃点怎么样？”
“不用了。我回家吃去。要我帮你生火吗？”
“不用。待会儿我自个儿生。说不定我就吃凉的算了。”
“我把撒网拿走了，行吗？”
“当然可以。”
其实压根儿就没有什么撒网了，孩子都记得是什么时候把网卖掉的。可是他们每天都上演这出幻想剧。那罐黄米饭和鱼同样是不存在的，孩子也知道得一清二楚。
“八十五这个数目很吉利，”老人说。“你喜欢见到我带上一条去掉内脏净重超过一千磅的大家伙回来吗？”“我得带上撒网去捞沙丁鱼了。你坐在门口晒会儿太阳，行吧？”
“行啊。我还有张昨天的旧报纸，我就看看棒球比赛的消息好了。”孩子不知道所谓昨天的报纸是不是也是想象出来的。不过老人倒果真从床底下摸出一份来。
“是佩利科在bodega（酒馆）给我的，”他解释道。
“我逮到沙丁鱼后就回来。我会把你的跟我的一起用冰镇着，明天早上一人一半。我回来后你给我讲棒球的事啊。”“扬基队是绝对不会输的。”“可是我担心克利夫兰印第安人队会赢呢。”“对扬基队要有信心，小子。想想那球艺高超的狄马吉奥①嘛。’
