因为还不知上面有一名教区送来的孤儿，所以在翻动床架时把他折了下来，也许是在偶然的一次集体洗漱中马马虎虎地把孩子给弄死——这种状况倒是非常少见的，原因很简单，并不是他们不小心，而是因为给这些孩子集体洗漱的机会很少。如果出现这些事有时需要接受审讯，情况可能会非常有趣。真遇到这种场合，陪审团会尽全力想出些麻烦的事来，教区居民会义愤填膺，联名抗议。但这类不合时宜的措施很快就会在教区医生和干事的证据和证词面前失去威信；教区医生会照例解剖尸体，结果发现小孩腹中空空（这当然是可能的）；教区干事的供词当然会合乎教区当局的需要（其忠诚自然可见）。再有，每当理事会要视察救贫院和寄养所时，肯定会派干事提前去通风报信的。然后，当他们到来时，这些孤儿们个个干净整洁，这自然没有什么可挑剔的！如果指望这种寄养制度能养出好苗子来，那是靠不住的。在奥立弗·特威斯特满九岁那天，我们看到的是矮小、瘦弱、苍白的他。然而天性和遗传使他的胸怀里有一颗善良坚毅的心灵，如果风趣点儿说，这还多亏寄养所里的营养短缺，才使他的心灵获得充分发展的空间。也许是这种原因吧，能侥幸活下来直到九个年头，或许还真要归功于此呢。不管怎样，今天确是他九岁的生日，这是实实在在的。
