Author Description

简·奥斯汀（1775-1817），英国女小说家。生于乡村小镇斯蒂文顿，父亲是当地教区牧师。奥斯汀没有上过正规学校，在父母指导下阅读了大量文学作品。她20岁左右开始写作，共发表了6部长篇小说。
奥斯汀终身未婚，家道小康。由于居住在乡村小镇，接触到的是中小地主、牧师等人物以及他们恬静、舒适的生活环境，因此她的作品里没有重大的社会矛盾。她以女性特有的细致入微的观察力，真实地描绘了她周围世界的小天地。尤其是绅士淑女间的婚姻和爱情风波。她的作品格调轻松诙谐，富有喜剧性冲突，深受读者欢迎。

贝内特先生说自己还没听说过这事儿呢。
“这可是千真万确的。”她接着说，“龙太太刚才来过，把事情一五一十地告诉了我。”

他的妻子不耐烦了，叫道：“难道你不想知道是谁租了别墅？”
“既然你想说，我只好洗耳恭听了。”

简·奥斯汀（1775—1817）被公认为是英国文学史上最伟大的小说巨匠之一。有的评论家说，她在文学方面的“炉火纯青”，正如音乐大师莫扎特在音乐领域里的“完美无瑕”。还有评论家说，奥斯汀在英国小说史上具有承上启下的意义，是唯一一位“可以与莎士比亚平起平坐”的作家。
2000年的时候，英国BBC做过一个“千年作家评选”活动。结果，奥斯汀紧随莎士比亚之后，排名第二。而且她还是前十位里唯一的女作家。人们说，奥斯汀这位伟大的女性虽然在世上只度过了四十二个春秋，但是她的存在是英国文学“永远的骄傲”。

除了这种“傲慢”与“偏见”的博弈和较量，奥斯汀在这部小说里，还通过贝内特五个女儿对待婚姻大事的不同姿态和处理方式，反映了她对爱情婚姻的一些基本观念：仅仅为金钱、地位、门第而结婚是错误的：终身大事如果完全不考虑上述因素，也终究是愚蠢的。因此，爱情和婚姻既不能以财产、金钱来衡量，也不应该把爱情婚姻当游戏，草率对待。最理想的婚姻，只应该以男女双方平等、真实的感情为缔结的基石。伊丽莎白对达西两次求婚的截然不同的态度，实际上也反映了一位独立的女性对人格尊严和平等权利的渴望与追求。
