第一章
我第一次接触毒品是在战争期间，大约是一九四四年或一九四五年。我认识一个叫诺顿的男人，他当时在一家造船厂工作。诺顿的真名叫莫雷利，要么就是类似的名字，他因为伪造支票被和平时期的军队除名了，并由于品性恶劣被评定为4-F。他长得像乔治·拉夫特，但要高一点儿。诺顿当时在努力提高英语水平，培养自己温文尔雅、和蔼可亲的举止。但是，他的天性里并没有和蔼可亲这一条。他不说话的时候，表情阴沉而刻薄，你知道就算你转过身去，他还是这副刻薄相。
诺顿是个勤恳的小偷，每天不趁工作时从造船厂偷点儿东西，就浑身不对劲。一件工具、一些罐头食品、一条工装裤，什么都行。有天他打电话给我，说他偷了一挺汤普森冲锋枪，问我能不能给找个买家。我说：“也许吧。拿过来再说。”
住房短缺已经初露端倪。一间对着升降扶梯、终日不见阳光的肮脏公寓，就要花掉我十五美元一周。墙纸正在剥落，因为暖气管有多少气就漏多少气。为了御寒，我用报纸把窗缝都塞严实了。蟑螂满地爬，我偶尔捏死一只臭虫。
听到诺顿敲门时，我正紧靠暖气管坐着，蒸汽有点儿潮。我打开门，看到他站在昏暗的楼道里，夹着一个牛皮纸包的大包裹。他笑了笑，说：“嗨。”
我说：“进来，诺顿，把外套脱了。”他拆开包着的汤普森冲锋枪，我们组装好，收起撞针。我说我会找人接手的。诺顿说：“哦，我还弄到点儿别的东西。”那是个扁平的黄色盒子，里面有五支皮下注射器，每支
装有半格令酒石酸吗啡。“这只是样品。”他指着吗啡说，“我家里还有这样的十五盒，你卖掉了我还能弄到更多。 ”我说：“我想想办法。”
那时我还从没碰过毒品，也没想过要尝试。我开始找人接手枪和注射器，结果就碰上了罗伊和赫曼。
我认识一个纽约乡下来的小混混，在里克酒吧做快餐厨师——“权宜之计。”他解释道。我打电话给他，说我有好东西，我们约在第八大道的“角吧”碰头，靠近第四十二街。
第四十二街的骗子都在这间酒吧碰头，这群怪人里尽是些胡吹神侃的家伙，早晚要走上犯罪之路。他们总是在找“牵头人”——一个能计划偷窃行动、给每个人详细分工的人。没有“牵头人”会要这么没用、倒霉、失败的人，他们只好继续找，逢人就满嘴跑火车，编造自己干过的“大买卖”，然后“权宜地”刷盘子、卖冷饮、跑跑堂、偶尔打劫醉汉和胆小的同性恋，找啊找，总是在找，找那个有大买卖的“牵头人”，他会说：“我一直在观察你。我这里有票活儿，需要的就是你这样的人。现在听着……”
杰克 ——通过他我认识了罗伊和赫曼——他可不像那些迷途的羊羔那样，盼望着手戴钻戒、枪塞在挂肩皮套里的牧羊人，听他用强硬而自信的嗓音说着有关毒贩、注射、行动的黑话，好像干一票持枪抢劫没什么大不了的，十拿九稳。杰克偶尔会春风得意，穿着新衣服，甚至开着新车，出现在我们面前。他身上流着骗子的血，说谎与其说是为了骗人，倒不如说是在满足自己。他长着一张乡下人的脸，看上去健康、轮廓分明，但又透出种病态的东西，叫人好奇。他会像糖尿病人和肝病患者一样，体重骤然上升或下降。这些体重上的变化往往还伴随着无法控制的坐立不安的冲动，于是他就会消失一阵子。
这种印象是不可思议的。上次看他还是个容光焕发的小子，一周左右他就会变得面黄肌瘦、老态毕现，你乍一看都不敢相信是他。他的脸上写满了痛苦，眼睛里却看不出来。这种痛苦只针对细胞。他的自我分成两半，有意识的一半正从那双属于流氓的、呆滞而迟钝的眼睛里往外看着，仿佛和这痛苦无关；另外那半被抛弃的自我则承担着这痛苦，这痛苦来自神经系统，来自肉体、内脏、细胞。
他溜进我坐着的隔间，点了一小杯威士忌，一口干掉，放下玻璃杯，歪着头微微后仰地看着我。
“这家伙搞到点儿什么？”他说。
“一挺汤普森冲锋枪，三十五格令左右的吗啡。 ”
“吗啡我马上就能出手，冲锋枪要点儿时间。 ”
两个警探走了进来，倚着吧台和酒保说话。杰克朝他们的方向偏了下头。“雷子。我们出去走走。”我跟着他出了酒吧。他穿过敞着的门。“我带你去见要吗啡的人。”他说，“这种地方你不会想去第二次的。 ”
我们下到独立地铁的最底层。杰克的声音没停过，对着看不见的听众滔滔不绝。他有本事能把声音直接扔进你的意识里，外部再怎么嘈杂都不能拉他出来。“不管什么时候，给我一把点三八，只要弹出击锤，开枪，我可以从五百英尺外干掉任何一个人。不管你信不信。我哥哥在衣阿华州囤了两挺三十毫米口径的机关枪。”
