《企鹅经典：去吧摩西》由两个中篇及五个短篇组成，各部分既相对独立又共同融合为一幅完整的画面。作者从多个角度考察了白人与黑人、人与自然的复杂而又变化着的关系，描绘了美国南方发展和变迁的历史。

Author Description

威廉·福克纳（Willian Faulkner ）（1897～1962），美国小说家。出生于没落地主家庭，第一次世界大战时在加拿大空军中服役，战后曾在大学肄业一年，1925年后专门从事创作。他被西方文学界视作“现代的经典作家”。共写了19部长篇小说和70多篇短篇小说。其中绝大多数故事发生在虚构的约克纳帕塔法县，被称为“约克纳帕塔法世系”。这部世系主要写该县及杰弗逊镇不同社会阶层的若干家庭几代人的故事。时间从独立战争前到第二次世界大战以后，出场人物有600多人，其中主要人物在他的不同作品中交替出现，实为一部多卷体的美国南方社会变迁的历史。其最*名的作品有描写杰弗逊镇望族康普生家庭的没落及成员的精神状态和生活遭遇的《喧哗与骚动》（又译《声音与疯狂》1929）；写安斯·本德仑偕儿子运送妻子灵柩回杰弗逊安葬途中经历种种磨难的《我弥留之际》（1930）；写孤儿裘·克里斯默斯在宗教和种族偏见的播弄、虐待下悲惨死去的《八月之光》（1932）；写一个有罪孽的庄园主塞德潘及其子女和庄园的毁灭性结局的《押沙龙，押沙龙！》（1936）；写新兴资产阶级弗莱姆·斯诺普斯的冷酷无情及其必然结局的《斯诺普斯三部曲》（《村子》1940，《小镇》1957，《大宅》1959）等。

艾萨克·麦卡斯林，人称“艾克大叔”，早过七十都快奔八十了，他也就不再实说自己的年纪了，如今是个鳏夫，半个县的人都叫他大叔，但他连个儿子都没有。
这里要说的并非他亲身经历、甚至亲眼目睹的故事，经历与目睹的是年纪比他大的表亲麦卡斯林·爱德蒙兹，此人乃是艾萨克姑妈的孙子，说起来是家族中女儿一支的后裔，不过却是产业的继承人，到一定时候又会是赠予人，这份产业原先有人认为而现在仍然有人觉得该是艾萨克的，因为当初从印第安事务衙门那里得到土地所有权状的是姓他那个姓的人，而住在这儿的他父亲手下的奴隶的有些后裔直到如今仍然姓他的这个姓。可是艾萨克本人却不作此想：——二十年来他一直是个鳏夫，他一生中所拥有的东西里，无法一下子塞进衣袋并抱在手里拿走的就是那张窄窄的铁床和那条沾有锈迹的薄褥子，那是他进森林野营时用的，他去那里打鹿、猎熊、钓鱼，有时也不为什么，仅仅是因为他喜欢森林；他没有任何财产，也从来不想拥有，因为土地并不属于个人而是属于所有的人的，就跟阳光、空气和气候一样；他仍然住在杰弗生镇一所质量低劣的木结构平房里，那是他和他女人结婚时老丈人送的，他女人临死时把房子传给了他，他装作接受了，默许了，为的是讨她喜欢，让她走的时候心里轻松些，不过尽管临终有遗言关照，这房子并非他的由法院判定有正式遗嘱规定而具有永久所有权的产业，正式说法是不是这样可不清楚，反正是这么回事，而他留着房子仅仅是为了让他小姨和那几个外甥有地方住，他老婆死后他们便跟他住在一起，也是为了自己可以住其中的一问，老婆在世时他就是这样住的，她那时也愿意他这样住，如今小姨和外甥们也这样，他们愿意他这样住，直到他去世，至于死后这并非他亲身经历、甚至亲自记得的，仅仅是从表外甥麦卡斯林处听来的，是耳闻而得的陈年旧事，他这外甥出生于一八五。年，大他十六岁，由于艾萨克这棵独苗儿出生时父亲已年近七十，所以与其说麦卡斯林是他外甥还不如说是长兄，或者说简直就是他父亲而非外甥与哥哥，这故事发生在早年间。

那时候他和布克大叔发现托梅的图尔又逃走了，便跑回到大房子里去，这时候，他们听见布蒂大叔在厨房里诅咒和吼叫，接着狐狸和那些狗冲出厨房，穿过门厅进入狗房，他们还听到它们急急穿过狗房进入他和布克大叔的房间接着看见它们重新穿过门厅进入布蒂大叔的房间，然后听见它们急急穿过布蒂大叔的房间重新进人厨房，到这时听起来像是厨房的烟囱整个儿坍塌了，而布蒂大叔大叫得直像条汽艇在拉汽笛，这时狐狸、狗群外加五六根劈柴一起从厨房里冲出来把布蒂大叔裹挟在当中而他手里也拿着根劈柴瞅见什么就揍什么。真是好一场精彩的赛跑呀。
当他和布克大叔跑进他们的房间去取布克大叔的领带时，那只狐狸已经窜到壁炉架上的钟后面去了。布克大叔从抽屉里取出领带，把几只狗踢开，揪住狐狸脖颈上的皮，把它拎下来，塞回床底下的柳条筐里，接着他们走进厨房，布蒂大叔正在那里把早饭从炉灰里捡起来，用他的围裙擦干净。“你们这究竟算什么意思，”他说，“把这天杀的狐狸放出来让一群狗满屋子的追撵？”
“别提那骚狐狸了，”布克大叔说。“托梅的图尔又跑了。快让我和卡斯胡乱吃点早饭。没准我们能赶在他到达那边之前把他逮住。”
