由于《五四飞鸿：罗家伦珍藏师友书简集》篇幅所限，少数书信仅以释文呈现于解读之后，作为正文的补充，旨在于便利读者进一步的研读。编校过程中发现书信墨迹中的漏字、衍字和明显错误，都用方括号[ ]注明；释文中凡需阐述之处，则用括号（）或底注。此外，父亲师友们的大名对我自幼如雷灌耳，留下深刻印象的却寥寥无几，这些我称为“太老师”、“太师母”、“伯伯”或“伯母”的长辈，在我写的“解读”中，则统一尊称为“先生”。
九十年前发生的“五四”运动，无论在政治或文化领域中，早已成为一个广义名词，代表的是中国近代史的一个特定时代与思想主题。虽然持续出现过许多不同的解读和评价，当年所讨论的问题与二十一世纪中国人所面对的困境相较之下，并没有多大差异。从《五四飞鸿》的内容里，可以看到两代知识人的思想醒觉；对文化事业的责任感，以及在革新教育和学术研究方面的努力。另外所凸显的，是人际间的友谊、坦诚、互助、谦和，师长对后进的提携、关心、赞助，后辈的尊敬、感恩和图报。这些高尚、可贵的情操与风范，在当今的中国，仍然应该是人们的榜样和楷模。
2006年我的书《罗家伦与张维桢——我的父亲母亲》出版后，百花文艺出版社的责任编辑高艳华女士便向我建议，三年后应该再合作编一本五四时代人物的书信选集，作为纪念“五四运动”九十周年的献礼。时光飞逝，当我犹豫不决起步缓慢时，她总是锲而不舍，不断为我提供新的创意，以期完成这件有时代意义的任务。我们之间电子邮件的往来，大批资料的复印和邮寄，以及频频不厌求评的切磋，持续了将近一年之久。在此向她特别致谢外，还要感谢好友梁文蔷女士帮我拍摄字画和书信、汪珏女士为我辨识草字、解读典故与辞藻。在我写作的整个过程里，我夫张桂生永远是严格的评审兼热心的支持者；在《五四飞鸿：罗家伦珍藏师友书简集》编审的关键阶段中，责编和总编所表现的认真与耐心，反映了我们共同的心愿——对历史、对先辈、对读者的责任感，都令我铭感于心。最后为了破解一些文字上的疑难，高女士先后请教了国内著名书法家田蕴章、陈骧龙、韩嘉祥、李云光诸位先生。对他们的慨然帮助，在此也表示我由衷的谢意。《五四飞鸿——罗家伦珍藏师友书筒集》的完成，不仅是我对历史的一点交代，也是我对父亲逝世四十周年至诚的追念。

Author Description

罗久芳
1934年生于南京，长于重庆。1948年出国，在印度和澳大利亚读高中，1955年在悉尼大学文科毕业，同年入美国密西根大学研究院主修近代史。1956年获硕士学位，1958年获得博士候选人资格。曾任密西根大学中文系助教，华盛顿大学远东学院助理。七十年代起开始整理父亲罗家伦遗稿、文物，协助出版《罗家伦文存》。1977年任职于美国西雅图中央社区学院，讲授英语及中国历史课程。近年出版《罗家伦与张维桢——我的父亲母亲》、整理校订毛彦文自传《往事》。其他研究文字和口述历史散见于多种报刊、杂志。

Book Abstract

顾颉刚（1893－1980）原名诵坤，字诚吾，江苏吴县人。苏州公立第一中学毕业，1913年考入北京大学预科，1920年历史系毕业后留校任职图书馆。1926年起历任厦门大学、中山大学教授兼系主任，燕京大学教授；国学研究所、哈佛燕京学社、中央研究院历史语言研究所研究员，北平研究院史学研究所历史组主任；云南大学、中央大学、复旦大学，震旦大学教授；齐鲁大学国学研究所主任，大中国图书局总经理兼编辑部主任，中央研究院院士。曾主持禹贡学会，主编《燕京学报》、《通俗读物》、《大众知识》、《边疆周刊》、《文史杂志》、《文讯》、《史与地》、《老百姓》等期刊。著作除《古史辨》（五册）外，并发表有关历史地理、民俗学论著多种，在整理、考证古籍方面亦成果丰硕。
父亲在北大与顾先生同学三年（1917-1920），虽不同系，却结成推心置腹的挚友，一同参加新文学运动、发起“新潮社”、为《新潮》杂志撰文发表对各种问题的意见。“五四”学生抗议行动开始时，顾先生正休学在南方家中，但是他密切关注北京同学们的活动，并在五月九日专函致傅先生和父亲，劝他们将风潮扩大。这是本书最早的信件节录（见后附一），代表处身局外的顾先生对这个社会运动的见地，以及给予好友们的激励。
1920年春天，顾先生眼见同学们纷纷准备毕业后出国深造，而自己因为家庭责任陷入进退两难，写了一封长信向父亲倾述。父亲先带了这封信当面向胡适教授陈说，半月后又在一封信里再次为此提醒，终于得到北大图书馆的同意，聘用顾先生以助教名义任该馆编目员，促成了他留校读书、研究的意愿。

从十九世纪中叶开始，中国长期历经内乱外患，国运渐趋衰落。知识界有志之士，无不怀着沉重的忧患意识，着力寻求救亡与图强的途径。父亲罗家伦（1897——1969）字志希，诞生在甲午战争之后，戊戌维新之前，成长在混乱动荡的二十世纪初期。1917年他考入北京大学，正当蔡元培出任校长，力主思想自由，实行相容并包的教育政策，尤其在文科方面以才取人，延聘的名流学者各展所长，百花齐放，蔚然成风。他们在《新青年》、《国故》等学术期刊里进行新思潮与旧传统之间的激烈争论，不久学生们也创办了《新潮》、《国民杂志》极力响应，引起了全国青年的共鸣。父亲便是《新潮》主要的编辑与撰稿人之一。
蔡校长不仅在校内鼓励学生积极参与学校的各种社团活动，自己也在校外与北京社会名流发起国民外交协会，密切关注第一次大战后的国际局势。
