邱华栋是我读书的指导老师。在当代中国作家中，像他那么博览群书和博览生活的人，特别是博览新书和博览新生活的人，还不多见。许多新书，我是从他手里接过来的；许多新生活，是从他那里听来的。我另有一个指导老师叫李敬泽。子曰：三人行必有我师。与他们三人行，我也变得新生和饱满起来。
于是，邱华栋的小说便与众不同。别的作家写的是“故”事，他写的是“新”事。从上个世纪90年代，他就能把我们刚刚看见的生活，眼前发生的新事，迅速放到他的小说里。当代中国社会变化多端，充满了魔幻和拧巴，真相和虚假，残酷和喜剧；一杯浑水，澄清需要时间，但邱华栋等不得。也许，他要的就是浑浊和新生，新生的东西未必都好啊，这个好与不好的浑浊和新生，也许更加刺激，更加接近真实。这是邱华栋小说的特点。所以我说他是一个前行者，是一个喜欢新鲜和占先的前行者。
大概是1996年吧，我第一次读的他的小说叫《城市战车》(后来改为《白昼的喘息》了)。小说中的一群人是流浪在北京的艺术家。流浪北京，当时是一种时髦。虽然过着朝不保夕的生活，但他们日常的生活和行为，和引车卖浆的芸芸众生截然不同。但他们也是芸芸众生，无非是众生中新产生的一部分人罢了。在生活中，我也有这样的朋友。但是，我只了解他们生活的表面；读了《城市战车》，他们新的、不同的、剧烈的内心世界，还是让我震惊。更震惊的是，作者在一门心思关注新生活和新人类时，主要关注的是惨烈的一面。原来他也不是一个省油的灯。生活的变化是，十多年过去了，这群流浪北京的人，竟有一部分人脱离了流浪的阶层，摇身一变成了上流社会的人，少数人还成了亿万富翁。如今我们回头再看《城市战车》，它就成了这些人的旧照片。2000年，我读了邱华栋的新作品《正午的供词》，写的又是前沿生活，影视界啊。这一洼浑水，邱华栋又下了脚。但这回他的主题大变，表面是写鱼龙混杂、物和欲横流的名利场，实际上是在写生和死。这个主题可有些经典。这跟邱华栋年龄的变大有关系吗？接着他在题材上也会返璞归真吗？接着我发现我错了，2002年，他的长篇小说《花儿花》出版了，题材依然很前沿，写的是网络大潮，写的是媒体；媒体虽然旧，旧时代的中国，就有“包打听”，但网络是新的，视频是新的，媒体从来没有这么脏和这么虚假，也是新的。在新的背景下，邱华栋写了几个媒体人的婚姻变化。新旧交加，让人啼笑皆非。对了，看邱华栋的小说，常让人啼笑皆非。感觉就是这个感觉。
邱华栋的小说还有一个特点，因为他博览群书，特爱在一本小说里，把庞杂的知识和他读这些知识的感受，一股脑按到小说里。比如上面那三本小说，既有对美术和绘画的知识堆积，也有对电影知识的深入挖掘，还写了许多有关花的学问呢。是好事还是坏事？对通过小说想另学知识的人，起码是件好事吧。曹雪芹就这么干过，在书里写过药方和菜谱，邱华栋也可以这么干。只是不要以枝伤干啊。
到了他的长篇小说《教授的黄昏》的时候，邱华栋依然是邱华栋，写的又是眼下最热门的一个词——“新阶层”。何谓新阶层？一是在过去的生活里没有出现过这种职业，这种职业新造就了一种人；一是过去这种职业有，但从这种职业里，产生了这种职业过去产生不了的人，都跟新的生活形态有关系。地产商人、白领、私家侦探、小姐和妈咪，这些是从近些年的中国地缝里钻出来的；经济学家、人文学者、大学教授、律师等，过去也有，但不是这么个有法，今天，他们全都脱下了过去的外衣，换上了新的行头。教授现在还有一个名字叫什么？这本书告诉我们，叫“叫兽”。
“新阶层”会带来新内容。邱华栋不但写了玫瑰浴、皇帝按摩、玻璃鸟巢中的女人、私人事务调查所，写了师生恋、夜总会中的大学生、代人受孕等五光十色的只有在当代的魔幻和拧巴的生活中才能出现的新的事物，更重要的是，他写出了这个时代平静的外表下，充满着血的气息，钱的气息，性的气息，及这个时代独有的混乱的气息。这是一个庞杂的时代。这是一本庞杂的小说。当然邱华栋还没忘了，他又塞进去许多他对当下许多问题，如社会问题、政治问题、经济问题、道德问题，包括对文学和《红楼梦》的思考和看法。比起他以前的小说，这本小说就更庞杂了。
这样说来，小说主人公的身份恰恰就不重要了。这本书的主人公是知识分子，是教授，是经济学家，是文学研究者。他们是知识分子，又不是，他们是知识分子中产生的“新阶层”。他们依靠知识(可不是文化，文化需要独特的见解)的卖弄，依靠帮闲，帮权和帮钱，当然最终还是帮忙了，开始过上了奢华的生活，少数人的生活。少数人的生活，都是前沿的生活。
正因为他们活在生活的前沿，通过他们，我们就更加看清了这个时代的喧嚣和痛苦，热闹和寂寞，繁华和贫困，富足和匮乏，物质世界对心灵的煎熬和挤压。表面说的是欲望，是权力，是钱，是性，但人与人关系的内部，说的却是人和生活的剑拔弩张的关系。这种关系的剧烈冲突，却又总是以愉快的兽的方式去解决。喜剧吧？当然，兽的方式，对于解决者总是愉快的。
从结构上讲，小说的叙述是复调的。通过一个文学教授的眼睛，来打量一个经济学教授的生活；通过一个经济学教授的婚姻变化，折射出当代社会的激烈变动。最大的变动是观念啊。这些混乱的庞杂的新的观念，破坏性地颠覆了旧生活，也歪歪扭扭建立了新生活。但是，这些混乱的庞杂的新的观念，除了刺杀的是光怪陆离的生活风景，还有拥有这些观念的他们自己。虽然他们生活在生活前沿和引导着生活，读了这本小说，我的结论是：他们不是我们的救世主，因为他们连自己都救不了。
