“理查德，你用的肥皂什么价？”安东尼·罗克沃尔问。

法国最杰出的短篇小说家要数莫泊桑，俄国当推契诃夫，美国则是欧，亨利。
欧·亨利原名威廉，西德尼·波特（William Sydney Porter），1862年9月11日生于美国北卡罗来纳州格林斯伯勒一个医生家庭。三岁丧母，幼时在堂亲开办的一所私立学校读书。十四岁时到本地一家药房当学徒，前后干了五年。十九岁到西部得克萨斯州一个牧场做客并调养身体，住了两年。二十五岁与一位十九岁的姑娘结婚，当年在《底特律自由报刊与真实》上首次发表作品。
这位作家仅享年四十八岁。他只写短篇小说（长篇小说《白菜与国王》是一部结构松散的政治讽刺小说，有时也被视作短篇小说集），一生作品近三百篇。至1920年，即他死后十年，他的小说销量达五百万册。1918年，美国设立了“欧·亨利纪念奖”，奖励每年最优秀的短篇小说，延续至今。
欧·亨利最有名的小说《The Gift of the Magi》曾收入我国中学课本，篇名《礼物》；一个流行很广的译本译为《麦琪的礼物》；本人译为《圣贤的礼物》。
欧·亨利曾明确说，他写作的目的只有一个：供读者消遣。
