一
数九寒天，太阳很快就要落下，红柳村村东口的土路上走来一个男人、一个女人和一个男孩。
男人四十多岁，瘦瘦的，个子不算高，肩上挑着一副担子。担子一头是两床破棉被和一个带补丁的口袋，另一头是一个漆皮斑驳已经看不出本来颜色的木箱子，这大概就是他的全部家当。男人额头冒着热气，头上的破毡帽挂着厚厚一层霜雪。他喘息着，走得很吃力，隔一会儿还要停下来等一等落在后边的女人和孩子。
女人一身黑棉衣，头上围着一条褐色薄头巾，两颊冻得通红。她不时伸手抹去睫毛上的霜雪，随即又将手塞进棉衣的袖口里。
男孩今年七岁，头戴一顶狗皮帽子，一件打了好多补丁的大棉袄罩住他大半个身子，跌跌撞撞跟在女人的身后。
男人叫卢明德，是个老实的山东汉子。女人卢赵氏，小巧可爱，是个温顺的女人。男孩叫卢宪青，是他们的儿子。
卢明德老家有几亩薄田，日子过得不算好，一九三三年春天的一场旱灾让黄河边上这个小村庄一下子陷入绝境。地里没了庄稼，家家户户都缺吃的。庄子里的年轻人纷纷外出逃荒，省下一点儿吃的留给行动不便的老年人和不能一起出走的小孩子。
灾荒来了，没有人再去雇他干活，卢明德一家五口陷入困境。这个靠力气吃饭的汉子跟他父亲说，他想出去闯荡几个月。
父亲问他是一个人出去还是带上这一家子。卢明德沉默了。父亲让他带上媳妇和两个孩子一起走，挨过这阵子再回来。卢明德和老婆卢赵氏商量后决定把八岁大的大儿子留下来和父亲做伴，只带上五岁的小儿子卢宪青一起走。
盛夏的一个早晨，卢明德挑起担子，一家三口上路了。
离开家乡，面向西北，他们沿着老辈人闯关东的故道一直往前走。沿路两边全是龟裂的土地和枯死的庄稼，偶尔可以看见几个逃荒的人影。离开家乡一个多月后，地上看到了成片的绿色，可想找个大户人家打上几天短工赚点盘缠还很困难。幸运的时候也只能找个人家多要上点吃的然后继续赶路。他们本打算尽快有个落脚的地方找点活干，挨过这段艰难的日子再回去，没想到接下来发生的事情一下把他们推上了绝路。
他们听一位随后赶上来的乡邻说：卢明德离开家乡没几天，他的大儿子就得了一种热病在昏睡中死去了。他的父亲吃了有毒野菜后浑身浮肿，不知现在是个什么样子。
卢明德眼泪止不住地往下流，蹲在路边一句话也不说。卢赵氏浑身瘫软，倒在地上，差点哭死过去。镇定下来，他们告别那位乡邻，匆匆走上回家的路。他们要回去照看自己的父亲。
又过了一个月，他们回到家乡。谁知父亲在半个月前就已经去世，是邻居们用一张草席将他父亲一裹，草草埋葬了。
天渐渐凉了，地里光秃秃的。卢明德和卢赵氏都感到了一种无奈、一种虚弱。他们知道，这里已经没有了牵挂，除了两间破房子，他们一无所有。没有吃的，没有烧的，多留一天都是一种煎熬。他们商量后还是决定离开。卢明德在父亲的坟上添了些新土，洒下一串泪珠后，一家三口重新走上逃荒的路。
