桐花开的时候，总是赶上凄冷的春寒，而到收拾桐子的季节，天又该冻得人瑟缩了。这是桐花的命运吗？其实，当我提笔描绘那一片花海的时候，我觉得，花开花落像过眼烟云一样，难道不更是当地女人的命运吗？我从来没见过那么短促的美丽，像焰火一样炽烈地亮遍了大半边天，也从来没见过这么快就谢却的花。一眨眼工夫，就迅即熄灭得无影无踪。山里面一年一度的桐花也好，和那里女人一生只有一次短促的青春也好，都是匆匆过客。
来了，马上，又去了。
我初到两省交界的这寂寞的深山里，不识这种春天里最早开放的花，而且是那么放肆般灿烂得让你惊呆了的花，白得那么堂皇，那么晶亮，让我惊奇。
“你们那儿不长桐子树？”翠翠问。
这女孩有一张特别俊俏的脸，应该说，我不是经多见广的人，但也并不孤陋寡闻，走过许多地方，还少有这偏僻山村的女孩，一个个长得都很耐看。最初，她对我有点戒备，因为我是个明码标价的“坏人”，被监管着。后来，久了，熟了，她甚至跟我有点亲近，因为她是那小山村里，唯一在县里读过两天初中的学生，后来就辍学了，她姐姐、姐夫当然不可能让她再念下去，不过，她总是想学点文化，短不了找我问个题什么的。她说：“你是作家，你会不知道这是什么花？”我摇头。
“桐花，什么时候，我领你到河那边的山后去看看——”接着，她用了一个文绉绉的词形容，“满山遍野！”涉过那条出美女的女儿河，翻过村前那座出懒龙的粑粑山，这里的民风乡俗，是女人勤劳男人懒，据说就和这河这山的风水有关。那次我独自去看桐花，浩瀚的花海把我镇住了。凡是眼睛看得到的地方，全是雪一样的白的桐花，芳菲遍处，满天砌玉，花瓣飘零，冷雨霏霏，那季节里，天和地，一片白，自得耀眼，白得吓人。说实在的，这土地贫瘠，民众穷困的山区，一年四季，从生到死，是不会有任何辉煌的，也就是在斜风冷雨中的这些桐花，造出一番轰轰烈烈的声势。
可惜，花开放得那样旺，但几乎无人欣赏，更无人赞叹。
柴鱼，人们都这么叫他的一条懒龙，是翠翠的姐夫，生产队的小队长，我们来到山村时才当上的。“每年都这样开花结果，看，有啥看的。”他不怎么坏，也不怎么好，准确地说，农村里这类糊弄上头，又糊弄下头的干部，好吃懒做的多。因此，他老婆，也就是翠翠的姐姐莲莲，除了是他无休止的泄欲工具外，等于是他家的另一条牛。
我问过那个初中生，“村里人说，你姐姐年轻时比你还要好看，干吗非找柴鱼？他除了要嘴皮子外，还有什么？”说实在的，在农村里，像他这样的人，倒比较容易当上队长“女人总是要捡一个男人出嫁的嘛！”捡，而不是拣，连挑选也不用的。她说这话时的平静口吻，如同说去背柴，去掐把野菜，去给猪喂食一样，“就像这桐子结了，收了，总要送去榨油。油榨完了呢，就肥田，早早晚晚……”桐子，就是那花的果实了。
这种树的经济效益不是很大，通常只在偏僻荒芜的山坳里，才成片栽种。然后，路边地头，长不成别的什么，随便插上几株桐子树，有一搭，无一搭，不当回事，死活由它，自生自长，谁也不把它放在心上。可这种树也真够泼皮的，很容易成活，根本不需要经心照管，水肥更不讲究。尽管在春寒料峭的日子里，它努力想给寂寥的大地，带来一些热烈的白，但谁也不注意它的存在。
它，真像那个莲莲，可怜的女人，当然，也有翠翠，她早晚也会像她姐姐一样，命运就这样安排的。
我不记得古往今来的文人墨客，有谁曾经给桐花似雪的美丽，写过只言片字？那时，我要不是有个“分子”的身份，成为类似婆罗门教规中的不可接触者阶层，也许早就想写一写那很快地开放，也很快地凋谢的桐花，以及山村里青春早逝的女人了。也许，或者，让那个翠翠逃脱她那个下流姐夫，走出丛山包围的小村庄。可那时的我，还在炼狱中，能为这个女孩做些什么呢？那花开得热烈，谢得壮观，花瓣满坑满谷地飘落下来，成堆成团，连山涧里的流水，也浮着白花花的一片，被湍急的细流驮着，往河里，汀里急匆匆地奔去。花随水逝，一去不再，就这样结束了那短短的辉煌。没有谁会经意地看上一眼的，因此，在众香国里，它怕是最寥落寂寞，无人理会的花了。
那时，我在一个筑路的工程队里被“改造”着，刚进入这个山村，工棚还未搭起的时候，我和那些工人曾借住在老乡家。把我派到队长家，某种程度因为我是需要加以“监管”的“分子”吧？不过，凭良心讲，柴鱼对我还好，并不是他的老婆和她的妹妹起了什么好作用。这里的女人很少能对自己的男人施加什么影响。他到过省里，见过世面，有一点农民的狡猾。便宜要占，但不想太缺德，碰上这样的人，就算不错了。有时，敲敲我的竹杠，得到些微的好处以后，尤其喝上两口酒，马上跟我套近乎。“我干吗？我犯不着！我跟你无冤无仇！你放心，我不会跟你过不去，谁知你将来——”“柴鱼，你算了吧！什么将来啊！”我打断他的话。
他女人，也就是莲莲，从来很少开口的。这时，她走过来，坐在我面前，端详着我，一字一句地说：“李老师，你会有将来的！”我始终牢记住，这个山村大嫂的善良祝福！那时，几乎所有人都把后背冲着我。只有她，还有她妹妹，总是用不忍心的眼光，怜悯的态度，看着我在那些“勇敢者”的折腾作践下，怎样度日如年的。
我也始终在想，若是这个世界卜，只有我一个人，那我真不如死去；同样，若是在我所到之处，所见之人，都是陷阱和充满敌意的话，那也没有什么活下去的必要了。唯其这个社会有哪怕是一丝的温馨，一点的同情，或者说，从心灵里对你的理解和信任，才使人觉得生存不仅仅是你一个人的事。
于是，你得活着，你得为这些并不是畜类的人活下去，是一件有价值的事。
就在柴鱼家的门前，有条叮叮咚咚的女儿河，在落花季节里，河面上便全是漂浮着的雪白桐花了，女人们在河边淘米，洗菜，或者，光着白生生的腿，在河里的圆石上，用木棒敲打着浸泡的衣服。花瓣就从她们手边，腿边淌过去，我注意到，谁也不在意，如同泡沫一样任其流逝。
慢慢地，我体味到，落英缤纷的桐花，就这样化作尘埃，也是这些山里女人的命运！我无论如何也解不开这里的女人，为什么青春如此短暂？为什么过早地衰老？而且，或许老天为了补偿她们这种美好时光匆匆逝去的遗憾，凡是年轻的姑娘，媳妇，都长得水灵细嫩，真像盛开时的桐花那样光亮明洁，也像早春汛期的女儿河那样丰满优美。
我还记得，初开工时，劳动力不足，从当地招来一些短期工，十六七岁的女孩子，都有一张俊美的脸，和极好的身材，尤其裹在帕子里的漆黑长发，在河边用皂角洗头时，真像丝一样的润泽。但在村里，那些结了婚，生了崽的女人，不知为什么，皮肤粗糙，一脸皱纹，上了年纪的妇女，无一不是佝偻着腰，眼神木木的。村里人说，莲莲早先比她妹妹还俏呢！可我刚到她家里时候，这个不到三十岁的大嫂，看上去像快五十岁的样子，要不说明的话，我是怎么也不相信眼前的事实。
她会衰老成那种样子，真是莫名其妙的。
