张建侯道：“这位小杨将军为人倒是好得很，一点儿架子都没有。姑父，你说是也不是？”包拯面色凝重，追问道：“你手上的血到底是从哪儿来的？”张建侯道：“我也不知道啊，我没受伤，小杨将军也没受伤，这血……”蓦地想起一事来，“哎哟”了一声，道：“我翻墙进来时绊到了什么东西，软软的，害得我摔了一跤，黑灯瞎火地看不清楚，我也没多留意，会不会……”包拯忙问道：“在哪里？”张建侯道：“就在东边花园的拐角处。”忙领头朝花园赶去。
应天书院学生沈周素来与包拯和文彦博交好，见这几人神色紧张、行踪神秘，亦跟了过来。
到了花墙下，却见花丛中漆黑一团，什么也瞧不见。还是沈周心思缜密，事先向吏卒索要了一个灯笼，举灯一照——只见墙根下横躺着一名中年男子，仰面朝天，正是大茶商崔良中。
众人大吃一惊。包拯抢上前一探鼻息，叫道：“崔员外还活着。”沈周的父亲沈英官任大理寺丞，他曾多次见过父亲审案，熟悉办案流程，见包拯俯身欲抱起崔良中，忙阻止道：“事涉凶案，先不要动他。
快，快去叫人来。”文彦博道：“我去。你们先守在这里。”飞一般地去了。
张建侯极是意外，“呀”了一声，道：“这么说，适才是这位崔员外绊倒了我，我身上的血就是他的吧？”包拯问道：“你在墙外时，可听到墙内有什么动静？”张建侯道：“没有啊。我是偷偷进来，怎么可能听到里面有动静、还偏要从这里翻墙呢？”沈周博学多艺，懂些医术，略一检视伤口，即道：“看崔员外胸腹伤处，血液才刚刚开始凝结，他遇刺应该还没有过多久，很可能恰好在建侯翻墙之前。”等了片刻，大批吏卒和一些尚未离开府衙的官吏们纷纷赶来。崔良中的侄子崔槐正到处寻找叔叔，忽惊见叔叔横躺在血泊当中，忙上前扶住，叫了数声，始终不见回应，不知道是死是活，一时手足无措，不知道该怎么办才好。
应天府推官上官秘惊见府衙中出了血案，吓得不轻，急忙命人协助崔槐将崔良中抬走救治。又见提刑司提点刑狱公事康惟一还在这里，忙道：“府衙出了这么大的事，下官不敢擅断，有请提刑官人来断处这件案子。”康惟一是路级官员，按照制度，凡是京东路的狱案都属于他的管辖范围。他明知道崔良中遇刺一案肯定不简单，上官秘是有心推脱，还是慨然应道：“好，提刑司接了这桩案子。”招手叫过宋城县尉楚宏，道：“你带几名弓手赶去保护崔良中。一旦崔员外醒来，立即问出凶手的名字，再速来禀报于我。”楚宏道：“遵命。”康惟一道：“包留守，这位张公子是尊夫人的亲眷，对么？”包令仪道：“正是。不过康提刑大可秉公执法，无须有任何顾忌。”为示意自己无私，当即拱手告辞离去。
张建侯愕然道：“听提刑官人的语气，莫非怀疑是我行凶杀人？”康惟一道：“你虽有来寻晏知府晦气的理由，却不走大门，偏要翻墙进府。
身上又有崔良中的血迹，如果你不是最大的嫌犯，还能有谁？”张建侯道：“笑话！我根本就不认得这个什么崔员外，才刚刚看到他的尸首……哦，他还没死，在刚才看到他躺在那里之前，我从来都没有见过他，我为什么要杀他？”康惟一道：“也许是你翻墙进来时，正好被崔良中看见，你怕他叫喊泄露你的行踪，一时心急，想要动手杀了他。”张建侯道：“我站在大门外叫了半天都没人理，这才不得已翻墙进来，我巴不得大伙儿都知道呢，还怕什么泄露行踪！”康惟一面色一沉，道：“总之目下你是最大的嫌犯，来人……”沈周忽道：“学生有句话，不知道当讲不当讲？”康惟一道：“讲。”沈周道：“学生适才看过崔员外伤口，他胸腹之处被刺了两刀，看情形应该是匕首一类的短兵器所伤，虽然刺中要害，但入刃不深，并没有伤及肺腑，所以崔员外只是重伤，失血而昏迷，并没有当场死去。”康惟一道：“那又如何？”沈周道：“适才众人亲眼所见，张建侯武艺高强，如果是他行凶，对付崔员外这种普通身手的中年男子，绝不至于一刀杀不死人，还要补上第二刀。”沈周的推断合情合理，一旁不少围观者都点头赞同，但康惟一却别有看法。他本人是名门子弟，其祖父康保裔在与辽军作战中力尽而死，朝廷多次赠赏追封，民间百姓亦尊其为“康公”“康王”，是大宋举国敬仰的民族英雄。他素来以祖父为楷模，做官力求公正严明，绝不行贪赃枉法之事，以无愧祖上英名。而目下凶案中受害者一方是天下最大的茶商崔良中，嫌疑犯则是南京留守包令仪的亲眷，正是向世人展示他康惟一不徇私情、不畏权贵的大好机会，因而也不愿意多听沈周的辩论，依然板着脸道：“这不过是你主观的臆想推测，怎么能成为为杀人疑犯开脱的证据？来人，速将张建侯拿下了，带回提刑司监狱监押，明日一早开堂审案。”张建侯是个火暴性子，怎肯受如此冤枉，立即倒退几步，拉开架势，预备以武力拒捕。
包拯道：“等一下，我有话说。”他早看出康惟一预备拿下张建侯好来个下马威，也不待对方同意，迅疾道：“行凶首先要有凶器。建侯的佩刀，之前已经为楚县尉缴去，各位看他身上可还有匕首之类的短兵刃。”走上前去，亲自搜索张建侯全身，连靴子都脱下来看了，果然并无兵器。
