屠格涅夫的《猎人笔记》是一本小说集，收录有25篇短篇小说，它们最初于1847—1851年陆续发表在《现代人》杂志上，1852年正式出版单行本。本书在俄国乃至世界文学史上都占有十分重要的地位。
1846年的夏秋两季，28岁的屠格涅夫住在奥廖尔省他母亲的领地，与切伦县的猎师四处打猎。在乡居期间，屠格涅夫见多识广，这些所见所闻足以让他创作好几年。1847年1月，屠格涅夫在《现代人》杂志上发表了短篇小说《霍尔和卡利内奇》。编辑建议他添上一个副标题——“选自《猎人笔记》”，以便为日后的连载做准备。由此，《猎人笔记》形成了一个系列，并与连载结束后推出了单行本。
屠格涅夫在书中描绘了俄罗斯无与伦比的自然风光，清晨的森林，广袤的草原，宁静的教堂等景观，组合成一幅充满油画质感的风情画，体现了大自然的灵动与伟大。
同时，书中描写了19世纪40年代俄国的乡村生活。当时的俄国实行农奴制，农奴受尽地主的压榨，经济破产，人身自由没有保障。屠格涅夫生长在地主家庭，自幼目睹农奴的悲惨境况，对农奴满怀同情。因此，屠格涅夫用简练精确的笔法，描写了农奴纯洁、善良、勤劳、质朴等美好品质，表达了对人民无尽的怜悯与同情。
本书成集出版后，被视为“一部点燃火种的书”，屠格涅夫也因此成为“反对农奴制度的热情支持者”。我们在阅读小说时，能感受到作者作为一个现实主义作家对生活本真的刻画，同时也能听到他作为一个人道主义者对社会不公的控诉，以及作为一名对富有美学鉴赏力的艺术家在大自然中发现的诗意。
