《西风烈丛书：荒村》：

三间破旧的石板房。支书老余有气无力地拐着小石磨，婆娘隔一圈往磨眼儿里添一把红果果。呼隆呼隆的石磨声中，就有血红如辣椒面的皮皮面面均匀撒下。小煤油灯的光随着屋外的风声跳跃着，忽明忽暗里，老余的额头上全是皱纹，稀疏的头发盖不住脑顶，真正糊住脑顶的全是土尘石尘草木渣。婆娘蓬头垢面的，一双硕大的手由于瘦，倒更像是鸡爪爪。
她似醒似睡的，但添料准确无误。从怀里的竹筐中抓一把，隔一圈准确装进磨眼儿中。磨在转，她的胳膊伸出去缩回来，伸出去缩回来，眼看着小磨拐拐打着手了，那手总离木头一两寸。拐小石磨，老余是立着的，婆娘是坐着的。两个人男婚女嫁时，父亲为他俩打了这副新磨。上扇一尺厚，下扇八寸。磨了近二十年的粮食，生了三个娃娃，上扇还有六寸，下扇方余四指。这石磨，也是尘世间的一对男女，上扇是男人，下扇是女人，中间那套榫的磨脐和磨眼儿就是他们交合的生殖器。他们生不出小石磨，却生出磨细的粮食，养育了要用小石磨的人。他们也和世间的男女一样，有情无情的岁月让他们憔悴了，苍老了。人如那磨，磨如斯人。
磨在屋子的左边墙根，右边墙根放着一张黑不溜秋的小方桌，驻队干部老贺就坐在桌旁靠墙的破凳子上。老贺是公社的副社长，年龄跟老余相当。他们面前的桌子上放着一碟盐水辣子和一碟黑溜溜如馍馍一样的东西，那就是馍馍，是用白蒿叶和去年洗过红苕粉剩下的渣子搅在一起加点儿盐，放在碓里杵成团贴锅烙出来的，跟粮食有点儿血缘关系。这是老余今晚招待老贺的夜饭。孩子们喝过了白蒿掺霉红苕片子面糊糊被老余撵上床睡觉去了。老余几次催老贺趁热吃，老贺虽饥火难耐，但终是没忍心动手。
老贺吧嗒着旱烟袋说：“我一会儿吃你的炒面吧。”老余晃荡着身子，脸上是苦苦的笑：“这哪是你副社长吃的炒面。”老贺也挤出点儿笑来，说：“你吃得，我就吃得。”两个人一说一答，磨下竹席上的红面面慢慢就堆上了尖，形成了一条环状的山脉。这东西委实算不得炒面，只是人把它想象成炒面罢了。去年秋天满树挂红的又涩又酸的野果果，经一冬的霜冻雪寒，干巴得像一粒粒麻雀屎，酸味淡了，涩味浓了。老余的老婆给队里放羊，捋回来积少成多地攒着，实在没粮下锅了，就磨它。他俩常以此代饭。孩子们不能全吃它，吃多了拉不出屎来。老余白天在青石沟农业学大寨工地上抬一天的石头，身子骨早快散架了，一小碗野菜糊糊还塞不住一个大男人的牙缝，他饿得常常双腿发软，两眼发黑。拐石磨一半用的是仅有的力气，一半靠的是身体的重量。他对久久不动蒿子馍馍的贺副社长说：“老贺啊，你去把我们大队的情况向社长反映反映吧，四百多口人哪，多批点儿供应粮，哪怕是霉红苕干也行，群众老的老小的小，总得有下锅的才行。”“是啊，只要是吃的都行，看你们吃这，我心痛啊！”贺副社长整天东奔西走，饥肠辘辘，对饥饿同样有切肤之痛。老余接着说：“我这还算好，还有一口进嘴的，有几户半大的娃儿，整天在去年的红苕地里掏烂红苕吃，队长赶都赶不走，家家户户的碗里，没一点儿五谷星星了。好几家把每年春天里吃榆钱儿的老榆树皮也扒光吃了。还有沟垴的成富贵，出一天工，罢了在野地里抠油菜根根吃。瞎眼婆娘吃观音土，脸都蜡黄了。昨天我们去他家调查，家里仅拇指粗几个红苕根根，那是留给他女子荷花吃的，还有……”老贺把旱烟锅锅狠狠在凳子腿上磕了磕，打断老余的话说：“老余，你别说了，情况我不是不清楚。你也知道，国家有困难，缴上去的公粮半夜都运走了，粮站的库房大多是空的呀，政府也在想办法。”“这日子，咋就过成了这样。”老余像是自责，也像是自问，又像是在叹息。
老余是经历过大苦大难的，但像这样的饥荒，他还是觉着度日如年。历史上的大饥荒，无非是旱灾水灾兵灾，这次的饥荒，与历史上的任何一次饥荒都不相同。不是风不调雨不顺，不是兵荒马乱，一年三百六十五天，三百天都泡在农业学大寨的造田运动中，匆匆忙忙种点儿庄稼，靠妇女孩子管理收割，运动一紧，红苕烂在地里腾不出手来挖。各大队虚报产量，把二百斤说成两千斤。
公粮按比例征收后，所剩无几。夏秋冬三季，群众基本靠瓜菜红苕度日，越过年，瓜菜殆尽，户户断炊。种粮食的农民一年四季没粮食下锅，这也是有史以来出现在神州大地的咄咄怪事。
一阵冷风灌进屋子，煤油灯差点儿被吹灭，随灯影晃动而冲进屋子的是治安主任李天保。李天保外号李大虾，只因他身长背驼，像只大虾米，全村人都叫他李大虾，他的大名倒是被人们忘记了。
“日他奶奶的狗地主，白天黑夜都不安分！”李天保带着一肚子火气，把他那杆一年四季不离身、漆已磨掉许多、最能表明他身份的老步枪重重杵在地上。
老余早已习惯了他那急屁火上墙的脾气，遇事不惊是他老余支书十几年练就的本事。他甚至连看都懒得看李天保一眼，兀自拐他的石磨。倒是老贺有点儿吃惊，忙问：“咋了，出了啥事了？”
