《新石头记》：
第一回逢旧仆往事怪迷离睹新闻关心惊岁月大凡一个人，无论创事业、撰文章，那出色当行的，必能独树一帜。倘若是傍人门户，便落了近日的一句新名词，叫做“倚赖性质”，并且无好事干出来的了。别的大事且不论，就是小说一端，亦是如此。
不信，但看一部《西厢》，到了《惊梦》为止，后人续了四出，便被金圣叹骂了个不亦乐乎；有了一部《水浒传》，后来那些续《水浒》《荡寇志》，便落了后人批评；有了一部《西游记》，后来那一部《后西游》，差不多竞没有人知道。如此看来，何苦狗尾续貂，贻人笑话呢？此时，我又凭空撰出这部《新石头记》，不又成了画蛇添足么？自曹雪芹先生撰的《红楼梦》出版以来，后人又撰了多少续《红楼梦》：《红楼后梦》《红楼补梦》《绮楼重梦》……种种荒诞不经之言，不胜枚举。我这《新石头记》，岂不又犯了这个毛病吗？然而，据我想来，一个人提笔作文，总先有了一番意思。下笔的时候，他本来不是一定要人家赞赏的，不过自己随意所如，写写自家的怀抱罢了。至于后人的褒贬，本来与我无干。所以我也存了这个念头，就不避嫌疑，撰起这部《新石头记》来。
看官们说他好也罢，丑也罢，左右我是听不见的。
闲话少提，言归正传。且说续撰《红楼梦》的人，每每托言林黛玉复生，写不尽的儿女私情。我何如只言贾宝玉不死，干了一番正经事业呢！虽然说得荒唐，未尝不可引人一笑。看官们，且听我诌上一个引子来：定国安邦，好少年雄心何壮，弹丸大的乾坤，怎当得风云莽撞；三尺长的龙泉，却吐出万丈光芒。大好的日光、月光，只可惜隔着了二三百层魔和障，害得人热念如狂！害得人热念如狂！好头颅，没处商量安放，只剩得热泪千行，热血一腔，洒到东洋大海，翻作惊涛骇浪，猛回头，前事尽荒唐！甚的是文场、战场、名场、利场，算将来，不过是五千年的一本糊涂账。
且说那年贾宝玉带了贾兰去下场，等到三场完毕，出场时候，茫茫大士、渺渺真人，早在场外候着，要带他去归真返璞，所以贾兰一回头，便不见了他。
须知他已经悟彻前因，一朝摆脱，所以任凭家中人等闹到马仰人翻，都是弃而不顾的了。大士、真人先引着他赶到毘陵驿，叫他别过了父亲贾政，然后把他送到大荒山青埂峰下，结了一个茅庵，叫他苦修起来。
从此又不知过了几世，历了几劫，总是心如槁木死灰，视千百年如一日。也是合当有事，这一天，贾宝玉忽然想起，当日女娲氏炼出五色石来，本是备作补天之用，那三万六千五百块都用了，单单遗下我未用。后来虽然通了灵，却只和那些女孩子鬼混了几年，未曾酬我这补天之愿，怎能够完了这个志向，我就化灰化烟，也是无怨的了。如此凡心一动，不觉心血来潮，慢慢的就热念如焚起来，把那前因后果尽都忘了，只想回家走一趟，以了此愿。却又自己想着已经做了和尚，剃了头发，这个尴尬样儿如何去得。非但父亲见了要动怒，就是姐妹们看了，也嫌我腌臌。不如耐过几时，蓄了头发再去罢。立定主意，就一天一天的养起头发来。说也奇怪，从前他苦修时，不知历了几世几劫，就如过了一日似的。如今要养起头发来。却一日比一年还难过。天天只盼头发长，那头发偏偏不肯长的快，恨得他每日在家长吁短叹。好容易捱了一年多，养得了尺把来长，将就可以辫起来了，心中十分欢喜，胡乱辫了。打开包裹，看见那回穿进场的一套半新不旧俗家衣裳还在那里，就取来换了。又带上那块宝玉。无意中在衣袋里掏出一样东西来，取来一看，却是那年向紫鹃讨得的那一面小镜子，就拿来一照，觉得自家模样儿，依然如旧。于是整顿衣裳，出了茅庵，不辨东西南北行去。心中只盼遇见了人，可以问路，谁知尽着行去，偏偏一人不见。看看已经日落西山，也不知走了多少路，喜得脚力尚不见乏，回头看时，连青埂峰的影子也不见了。此处又不知是何所在，正在彷徨之际，猛抬头看见头上一块乌云，愈散愈大’，不一会便洒下雨来。急得宝玉跺脚道：“今番坑了我也，这里四面都没有人家，往那里躲一会儿呢？”没了主意，只得发脚乱跑。跑到前面，见着一个树林子，便急急的转人林子里去。他心中本望林子里或者有了个人家，可以躲避躲避。到得林子里时，抬头一望，虽然没有人家，却喜有一座破庙。
宝玉此时如获至宝，连忙跑_了进去，只见这庙山门已倒，门下势难避雨的了，只得跑到殿上去。
