Content Description

戴厚英是二十世纪八十年代初引人注目的女作家。其长篇小说《人啊，人！》《诗人之死》出版后激起广大读者的强烈反响。随后创作的一批中短篇小说，作家却另换了一副笔墨，致力于追求浓郁的乡土气息，运用白描手法刻画人物，颇见艺术功力。
《高的是秫秫，矮的是芝麻》收录的中篇小说，均取材于作家所熟悉的故乡生活。作品以严肃的现实主义态度，朴素的语言，细腻的笔触，描绘淮北边远小镇及周遭农村的特异风光，再现生活于这片古老土地上的男女主人公心灵深处的感情波澜，寄寓作家对故乡人民的深切思念、赞美和热爱。

Author Description

戴厚英（1938-1996），女，安徽颍上人。1960年毕业于上海华东师范大学中文系。历任上海作家协会文学研究所文艺理论组助理研究员，复旦大学中文系、上海大学文学院副教授。1981年开始发表作品。1985年加入中国作家协会。著有长篇小说《人啊，人！》、《诗人之死》、《谷中的足音》、《往事难忘》，中短篇小说集《锁链，是柔软的……》，散文集《戴厚英随笔》等。

《高的是秫秫，矮的是芝麻》：
“人家打架了，就不能去拉一把？和破水瓶赌的哪门子气！”大秀又顶了一句。
一向能说会道的小云突然不说话了，大概她也觉得大秀说的有理吧？可是她不肯认输，仍然不去拉架，却自顾自地扫起自己门前的瓶胆碎片和面条汤来。
大秀的眼睛里流露出无限的轻蔑，她往韩家屋里奔去。还没等她走到，韩家夫妇已经扭打着到了院里了。女的嘴里不住地骂着：“赌！赌！赌！好不容易赚点钱，都给你今天一天输光了，你还有脸来家！还有脸吃饭！就不给你吃！就倒给狗吃！”男的一句话也不说，只是用手狠命地抓住女的手腕，不让她揪自己的耳朵。
我觉得应该过去拉架。可是怎么才能把他们拉开呢？是女的在扭住男的不放啊！我想叫小云去拉，小云端着面条进屋里去了。
我奇怪大秀为什么也站着不拉。现在我已经看清了大秀的面容。白净清秀的圆脸。眼睛是褐色的，透露着聪明和坚毅，一看就知是一位能干的姑娘。那圆圆的鼻子，又给她的脸上增加几分稚气和憨厚。我怀疑，这不是人们所害怕的那个大秀。
“二姐！只管打！打他个不争气的东西！好不容易政策允许给他一条生活门路，他却不想好好过日子，不怕丢脸！几年的书白念了！”
我只听说小韩该称呼大秀表姑，却不知大秀怎么会称呼小韩的妻子叫“二姐”。但我也并不觉得奇怪。他们都是回民。大约是这里的回民人少，又只能同族通婚，造成了亲戚关系的复杂性。
不料“二姐”（以后我们全家都这么叫她了）听了大秀的话，狠劲完全没有了。她松开扭住男人的手，一屁股坐到地上哭起来。这时候，大秀走过去了。她把二姐从地上拉起来，拍拍她身上的灰，小声慢语地劝道：“累了一天，还不够吗？回屋歇着去吧！”二姐乖乖地回去了。大秀转脸对着蹲在地上的小韩叱道：“还死在这里干什么？回去打水给二姐洗脸，弄饭吃！”小韩也乖乖地去了。
这时，大秀才长叹了一口气，回身去端刚才放在地上的面条碗。碗里的面条不知什么时候被狗吃了。我看见大秀拿起那只空碗的时候的样子，真恨不得往地缝里钻去！我怎么就没想到把那碗面条端起来放到我家的饭桌上呢？她一定以为我和我的一家人都有意使坏了。
我想解释一下。可是还没等我开口，就听见“当”的一声，大秀把饭碗摔在一块石头上了。嘴里还骂着：“狗娘养的，你也欺负人！”
我的脸上热辣辣地难受。
为了弥补自己的过失，晚饭后，我让妻和我一起去看看韩家夫妇，劝他们吃饭。
小韩不在家。二姐睡在床上。我见不方便，退了出来，让妻去劝二姐。不一会儿，看见小韩从前街回来，手里拿着一个荷叶包。我连忙迎上去招呼：“小韩，还没吃饭吗？”小韩也客客气气地答应我：“吴老师，打搅你们了！”

Introduction

在中国，“小说”一词使用已久，最早见于《庄子》，《汉书·艺文志》说是“小说家者流，盖出于稗官；街谈巷语，道听涂说之所造也”。小说的雏形是神话传说的简略记录，后来发展到《搜神记》一类志怪小说和《世说新语》一类志人小说，结构都很简单。及至出现唐人传奇，宋元话本，小说乃由粗具梗概变得枝繁叶茂起来。鲁迅指出：“是时则始有意为小说”，就是说，小说创作的自觉意识直到这时方始建立，结果是：小说有了中篇的规模，题材有所拓展，最突出的是情节性大大加强，而语言也趋于通俗，更富于表现力。明初《三国演义》、《水浒传》的制作，标志着古典小说趋向成熟；随着清代《红楼梦》的出现，达致巅峰状态。盛极而衰，紧接着，变革时代也就适时而至了。
宋元“说话”中有一类名为“小说”，指的是话本中的短篇故事，与我们现今使用的概念相去甚远。我们说的“小说”，实际上是晚近的舶来品，可以说，是由欧洲的小说观念再命名的。
在欧洲，小说发展的道路与我国大体相似，即由神话而传奇而故事，由短篇而中篇而长篇。至十九世纪，长篇小说十分鼎盛，致使黑格尔断言极限来临。及世纪末，现代主义小说很快出现，传统的主题和写法被打破了。其实，十八世纪末以前，欧洲小说的体式已经相当完备，只是小说之名（novel）迟至此时才正式流行起来罢了。
几乎与此同时，有了中篇小说（novelette或novella）的名目。中篇小说是中型的叙事散文作品，一般而言，以篇幅的长短划界，但因此也就有了相当的弹性，需要把所叙的事件的规模、时间长度、结构的复杂与完整的程度同时作为参照。绥拉菲摩维奇的中篇《铁流》，论结构，可以算作长篇；莫泊桑的《俊友》本是中长篇，意大利作家莫拉维亚却是把它当作注水的短篇来看的。
