第一章昏暗的小屋里，我的父亲直挺挺地躺在地板上，他一身白衣裳，脚趾头怪异地张开着，一双亲切的手静静地放在胸前，手指弯曲着，他那双曾经快乐的眼睛紧紧地闭着，如同两个黑色圆铜钱，他和善的脸庞黯黑无光，难看地龇着牙，看上去挺吓人的。
母亲长跪在那里，光着上身，下半身罩着红裙子。她拿着我常用来锯西瓜皮的那把小黑木梳，将父亲又长又软的头发从前额梳到脑后。母亲总是喃喃自语，声音粗重而又沙哑，灰色的眼睛肿成了一条缝，大滴大滴的泪水不住地朝下落。
外婆拉着我的手。她圆滚滚的身材，脑袋大，眼睛也大，鼻子松软，令人发笑。她一身黑衣裳，整个人像是柔软的皮球，挺好玩。她也在哭，哭得挺有趣，好像挺合拍地伴随着母亲哭，浑身颤抖，把我往父亲身边推。我躲在外婆身后，硬撑着不肯朝前去。我又害怕又觉得挺难为情的。
我从来没有见过大人哭，也弄不懂外婆反复说的话是什么意思：“快和爸爸告别啊，你再也见不到他了，孩子，他还不到该去的年纪，还不到时候就死了……”我害过一场大病，刚能下地行动。我清楚地记得在我生病时的情形：父亲兴致勃勃地看护着我。后来，他突然不见了，替换他来照顾我的是外婆。
“你打什么地方来？”我问她。
“打上边，不是走来的，而是坐船来的，在水上是没有办法走的，小家伙！”她回答。
这挺可笑，让人莫名其妙，因为我们家楼上住着几个染着头发的大胡子波斯人，地下室住着一个黄脸的加尔梅克老头儿，是贩卖羊皮的。顺着楼梯，骑着栏杆滑下去。如果摔倒了。就会滚下去。——我是清楚这些的。这和水有什么联系呢？全乱套了，糊涂得叫人发笑。
“为什么我是小家伙？”“因为你太爱闹。”她笑着说。
她说起话来那么亲切，那么快乐，那么流利。自打见到她的第一天起，我便对她有了好感，这时我盼着她快点带我离开这间屋子。
母亲让我很压抑，她的眼泪和痛哭在我心里引起异样的、不安的感觉。
我头一回看到她这种样子。母亲一向神色严厉，很少说话，她人高马大的，常常打扮得干净利索。她有一副筋骨强硬的体魄和一双劲头很大的手。可眼下，不知怎的，她全身都膨胀起来，显得特别凌乱，看上去令人难受，衣服被撕得破破烂烂的。往日梳得很整齐、如同一顶光亮的大帽子的头发，如今在赤裸的肩膀上披散着。耷拉到脸上，几根发辫来回摆动着，轻拂着睡熟了的父亲的脸。我在屋里已经站了很久，但是她却看也不看我一眼，她一直梳理父亲的头发，不住地放声痛哭，眼泪扑簌簌地直往下落。
穿黑衣服的乡下人和警察从门缝向屋里伸头张望。警察气冲冲地喊了一声：“赶快收拾！”窗户用黑披肩遮着，风吹得披肩如同船帆似的鼓起来。有一回，父亲带我划帆船，忽然轰隆一声响雷，父亲笑着用膝头使劲夹着我，大声说：“没关系，别怕，‘大葱头’（这是父亲对瓦列西的亲热的称呼）！”母亲突然从地板上吃力地站起身，立刻又坐下去了，仰面倒下，头发散落在地板上。母亲紧闭着双眼，惨白的面孔变青了。如同父亲那样龇着牙，声音恐怖地说：“关上门……瓦列西，滚出去！”外婆推开我，跑到门口喊道：“亲爱的街坊们，别害怕，别管她，为了基督，请快走开吧！这不是霍乱症，是生孩子，请原谅，好心的人们！”我跑到昏暗的角落里，藏在箱子后边，看着母亲在地上不断地打滚、呻吟，咬得牙齿格格响，外婆在她身边趴着，亲切而高兴地说：“为了圣父圣子，沃莉莎，忍着点儿！圣母保佑……”我吓呆了。父亲身旁的她们在地板上忙成一团，碰撞着父亲的身体，可是他纹丝不动，好像还在笑呢。她们在地板上忙碌了很长时间。母亲一回又一回地尝试着站起来，但又都倒下去了。外婆如同一个又黑又软的大皮球，在屋里屋外滚来滚去。过了一会儿，黑暗里突然传出小孩的哭声。
“感谢主！”外婆说，“是个男孩！”说着她点亮了蜡烛。
我可能在墙角睡着了，后面的事情已经记不得了。
我记忆中的第二个印象，那是个下雨天，在荒凉坟场的一角。我立在光滑的黏土小丘上，看着父亲的棺材被放到一个坑里。坑底满是雨水，还有几只青蛙，有两只爬到黄色的棺材盖上了。
在父亲的坟旁，有我，有外婆，还有浑身淋得湿透了的警察和两个手拿铁锹的脸色阴郁的乡下人。温暖的雨点如同细小的玻璃珠，不住地洒落在人们的身上。
“埋吧！”警察走到一边，说道。
外婆拿头巾的一角捂着脸哭了。两个乡下人弯着腰匆忙往坟坑里填土，打得坑底的水“叭叭”地响。两只青蛙从棺材上跳起来，想要往穴壁上爬，土块还是把它们打落到坑底掩埋了。
“走吧，列尼耶（瓦列西的爱称）。”外婆扳住我的肩膀说。我挣脱了她的手，我不愿离开。
“真拿你没办法，主啊。”不知道外婆埋怨的是我还是主。她低着头，默默地站在那里很久。墓穴填平了，她还站在那里一动不动。
