Author Description

索尔·贝娄（SAUL BELLOW，1915—2005），美国作家。生于加拿大魁北克省的拉辛，在蒙特利尔度过童年。一九二四年，举家迁至美国芝加哥。一九三三年，贝娄考入芝加哥大学。两年后，转入西北大学，一九三七年毕业，获得社会学和人类学学士学位。同年，赴威斯康星大学攻读硕士学位。之后长期在大学执教。一九五三年出版的《奥吉·马奇历险记》使他一举成名，奠定了他的文学地位。其后，陆续出版了《雨王亨德森》（1959）、《赫索格》（1964）、《赛姆勒先生的行星》（1970）、《洪堡的礼物）（1975）等。这些作品袒露了中产阶级知识分子的精神苦闷，从侧面反映了美国当代“丰裕社会”的精神危机。此外，贝娄还出版过中短篇小说集、剧本，以及游记。贝娄的一生可以说是集学者与作家于一身，他在创作上继承了欧洲现实主义文学的某些传统，并采用了现代主义的一些观念和手法，强调表现充满矛盾和欲望的反英雄。他曾三次获美国国家图书奖，一次普利策奖；一九六八年，法国政府授予他“文学艺术骑士勋章”；一九七六年，由于其作品“融合了对人的理解和对当代文化的精妙分析”，贝娄获得诺贝尔文学奖。

我是五十五岁那年买机票去的，回想当时的处境，真是痛苦极了。种种事儿开始纠缠我，很快就在我心里造成一种压抑。这样那样的事儿——我的双亲、妻子、女友、儿女、农场、牲畜、习惯、金钱、音乐课、酗酒、偏见、鲁莽、牙齿、面貌、灵魂——一窝蜂似的向我袭来，我忍不住大喊大叫：“不行啦，不行啦，滚回去吧！他妈的，让老子清静一点！”可它们会让我清静吗？它们全都属于我，都是我自己的事儿。而且，从四面八方向我袭来，混作一团，简直弄得乌烟瘴气。
然而，我原以为强大无比的压迫者——这个世界，终于从我身上移走了它的愤怒。如果我要让诸位弄个明白，讲清我为什么要到非洲去，我得正视那堆事实。让我从金钱讲起吧。我从老头子手里继承了三百万美元，遗产税除外；但我是个不争气的家伙，我有理由这样认为，最主要的理由就是我的行径荒唐，像个无赖。不过当事情弄到很糟糕的地步，我常常暗自去翻阅书本，看是不是能找到一些富有启发性的字句。有一天，我读到这样一句话：“罪过总会得到宽恕，善行不必非要先修。”这话给我极为深刻的印象，我随处都在暗暗念着它。但不久，我忘了这话是从哪本书里读到的。我父亲留给我成千上万册书，其中有好几本是他自己写的。那句话准出自那些书中的一本。于是我查了几十部书，但翻出来的尽是钞票，因为我父亲爱用钞票当书签，从衣袋里摸出什么算什么——五元、十元或二十元一张的，都用来当书签。有些竞是不再通用的三十年前的钞票，黄背面的大张钞票。也许是怀旧的缘故吧，见到这些钞票我很高兴；于是我闩上书房的门，不让孩子进去，花了整整一个下午的时间，搭着取书的梯子去抖动书页，抖出的钞票纷纷扬扬飘落到地上。可是我却始终没有找到那句关于宽恕的话出自何处。
另一桩事情是：我是一个名牌大学的毕业生——我想没有必要道出母校的大名使她难堪。要不是靠了亨德森这个姓氏和我父亲的名望，他们早就把我踢出学校了。我生下地就有十四磅重，而且是个难产儿。
长大后，身高六英尺四，体重二百三十磅；偌大一颗头颅，凹凸不平，头发像波斯羊身上的毛；一双阴阳怪气的眼睛，常常眯成一条缝；举止粗野，还有一个大鼻子。父母生了三个孩子，惟有我活了下来。父亲给了我无比的慈爱想要宽恕我，但我认为他始终未遂心愿。到了结婚的年龄，为了讨父亲欢喜，我娶了个门当户对的女人，一个了不起的女人：漂亮、高大、优雅、矫健，长长的手臂、金黄的头发、挺懂感情、生育力强，还很娴静。不过，要是我补一句，说她神经不正常，她娘家的人都只好听着，没法争议，因为她确有精神分裂的毛病。我呢，也被认为是个疯子，而且有充分的理由——喜怒无常、脾气暴躁、独断专横，真有些疯疯癫癫的。按孩子的年龄大小来推算，我们婚后在一起生活了二十年，生了爱德华，蕾茜，阿丽斯，之外还有两个孩子一噢，生的孩子可真不少啊！愿上帝保佑这一帮小子吧。
