Author Description

史蒂文森（1850-1894），英国小说家、诗人，英国新浪漫主义文学代表之一。他出生于苏格兰的爱丁堡，从小爱好文学，富于幻想；成年后，放弃了律师职业，专门从事写作。斯蒂文森很早就染上结核病，一生与海*缘，可是他却创作了许多与海盗和冒险有关的小说，此外另有多部游记。代表作品有：《金银岛》《诱拐》《化身博士》《内河航程》等。

《金银岛》：
屈劳尼大老爷、利弗西大夫和其他几位先生叫我把关于金银岛的全部详情细节写下来，只有这个岛的方位不要说明——那只是因为岛上还有些财宝没有发掘出来——我就在公元一七××年动笔，从我父亲开设“本卜舰队司令”客栈和那位带刀伤疤痕的棕色老水手初次在我们店里投宿的时候写起。
我回想当年的情景，仿佛还是昨天的事情一般。
他拖着沉重的脚步，缓慢地走到客栈门中，身后跟着一辆手推车，载着他的水手提箱。他是个身材高大、体格强壮、面色黑黄、心情沉重的大汉；一条油光光的发辫。拖在他那件肮脏的蓝色外衣上；双手粗糙，带着疮疤，污黑的指甲裂开了口子；一边脸上有一道刀伤的铁青色疤痕，显得很脏。我记得他向小海湾四面张望，同时自吹口哨，然后突然放声唱出他后来常唱的那首老水手的歌——十五条好汉同在死人箱。上——哟嗬嗬，快喝一瓶酒！歌调高亢而发颤，这种歌声似乎是在推动船上的绞盘棒的时候配合着劳动的节奏形成的。随后他便用随身带着的一根木杠似的棍子在门上敲了几下。我父亲应声出来，他便粗声粗气地叫他拿一杯朗姆酒来。
他接到送来的酒，慢慢地喝着，像是一个行家似的品尝着，津津有味，同时还在向海边的悬崖张望，又抬头看看客栈的招牌。
“这个小湾子倒是挺方便，”他终于开口说话了，“这小酒店开在这个地方，也怪叫人欢喜呢。伙计，顾客多吗?”我父亲告诉他说不多，客人少得很，真是太晦气了。
“口欧，那么，”他说道，“我在这儿住下正好。喂，伙计，”他向推手推车的人喊道，“就停在这儿，给我把箱子搬进来。我要在这儿住几天，”他接着说，“我是个随随便便的人，只要有酒和咸肉、鸡蛋就行了。那个山头上还可以望见船只走过呢。你问怎么称呼吗?就叫我船长好了。啊，我知道你们在指望着什么——喏，”他随手往门口扔下三四个金币，“等这些钱花完了的时候，你们就告诉我好了。”他活像一个长官的神气，凶狠地说道。
说实在的，他穿得虽然很坏，说话也挺粗气，看样子却不像一个普通的水手，而是像个大副或是船长，惯于受人服从或是动手打人。推手推车的人告诉我们说，前一天早晨，驿车把他载到“乔治王”旅馆门前，他下车就问海边一带还有哪些小客栈，一听说我们这个小店名声还好，而且又很清静，他就选中了这个地方落脚，没有上别处去住。我们对于这位客人就只能了解到这么一点。
他这个人有不爱说话的习惯。他整天在海湾一带荡来荡去，或是在高崖上走动，手里拿着一个黄铜架子的望远镜；晚上他就坐在大厅里靠近火旁的一个角落，喝着很浓的朗姆酒。人家和他讲话，他多半都不搭理；他只是突然露出一副凶相，鼻子里喷出一股气来，响声很大，就像吹雾角。一般。因此我和常上我们店里来的人们不久也就知道，只好随他的便。每天他外出游荡回来，总要问一问，是否有航海的人从这里经过。起初我们以为他是希望有同行的人和他做伴，才提出这个问题。后来我们才渐渐明白，他是很想回避他们。每逢有个海客在“本卜舰队司令”客栈投宿（随时都有这种人来住店的，他们是沿着海岸到布利斯托去的），他在进人大厅之前，总要先从门帘外面往里看看那个人；只要有那样的客人在场，他准是一声不响，像只耗子似的。对我来说，这桩事情至少算不了什么秘密；因为我可以说是和他一样提心吊胆。在这以前，有一天他把我拉到一边，悄悄地吩咐我时常注意侦察一个独脚水手，只要这个人出现了，马上就告诉他；他答应每月一号给我四便士。每到月初，我去找他要这点钱，他往往只哼哼鼻子，朝我瞪眼，把我吓住。可是还不到一个星期，他就改了主意，把那四便士拿给我，又对我叮嘱一番，叫我注意那个独脚水手。
那个怪人常在我的梦中出现的情景，不用我说你也会想得到。在狂风怒号的夜里，屋里每个角落都被风震动了；海涛在小湾一带和高崖上冲击，响声如雷。这时候我就会看见他现出各种奇形怪状，做出各式各样的凶相。有时候他的腿是从膝部切断的，有时候是从大腿上切断的，有的时候他是一个生来就只有一条腿的大怪物，这条独腿是长在他身子正中的。我看到他跳过篱笆和水沟，紧追着我，那真是最可怕的噩梦。为了每月挣这四便士，我在这些可恶的幻觉中付出的代价实在是够大的了。
但是我虽然被我想象中的那个独脚水手的形象吓得要命，我对船长本人却远不如别的和他相识的人那么畏惧他。有些夜晚，他喝的掺水的朗姆酒太多，脑子受不了，便独自坐着，唱他那些邪恶而狂野的古老水手歌曲，把谁都不放在眼里；可是有时候却又叫些酒来，请所有的人都喝，还强迫那些发抖的同伴们听他讲故事，或是叫大家跟他合唱。我常常听到满屋响彻“哟嗬嗬，快喝一瓶酒”的歌声。所有的邻居为了保命，都参加合唱，歌声之高，一个赛过一个，为的是免得挨赳。因为在他的狂性大发作的时候，他是全场最专横的角色。他拍着桌子不许大家说话；如果有人提出问题，或是有时候谁也不声不响，他都会大发脾气，认为那是大家没有用心听他讲故事。他也不许任何人离开这个小店，一直要到他喝得醉醺醺，跌跌撞撞地上床睡觉的时候，才算了事。
