Author Description

威廉·萨默塞特·毛姆（1874—1965），英国小说家、剧作家、散文家、文艺评论家，20 世纪英国最知名的作家之一。毛姆一生著作甚丰，无论是小说、剧本、评论、随笔、游记还是回忆录，都广受好评，代表作有《人性的枷锁》《月亮与六便士》《寻欢作乐》《刀锋》《面纱》等。他的小说机智、幽默，常在讥讽中潜藏对人性的怜悯与同情。
毛姆晚年享有很高的声誉。英国牛津大学和法国图卢兹大学分别授予他荣誉文学博士学位。1954年，英国女王授予他勋爵爵位。

Book Abstract

比亚焦·博纳科尔西度过了繁忙的一天，他感到有些疲惫，但出于凡事都要井井有条的习惯，睡觉前还要在日志里记点儿什么。这次他记的内容很简单：“市里派了一人去伊莫拉见公爵。”他或许觉得提不提该人的名字并不重要，这个人就是尼科洛·马基雅维利，公爵是切萨雷·博尔贾。
这一天忙碌而漫长，比亚焦一大早就从家里出发了，跟他一起出门的是他的外甥皮耶罗·贾科米尼。皮耶罗骑的是一匹粗壮的矮种马，马基雅维利答应带他一起去伊莫拉。这一天—— 一五○二年十月六日，正是皮耶罗十八岁生日。在这样的一个日子到外面的世界闯荡一番，真是再合适不过了，他长这么大可是第一次出远门呀！皮耶罗身材健硕，相对他的年龄来说个子算高的，长着一副讨人喜欢的面孔。由于母亲寡居，他在舅舅的教导下接受了良好教育，他的意大利语和拉丁语不仅能做到书写优美，而且能够使用雅致得体的措辞。马基雅维利对古罗马人充满了热烈的仰慕之情，在他的建议下，皮耶罗对古罗马人的历史也有了不算粗疏的了解。马基雅维利还珍视着这样一种信念：人与人之间历来并无区别，喜好也无二致，因而在相同情况下，同因必然产生同果，所以，倘能牢记古罗马人的处事方式，后人处理起相同情形时就会谨慎小心，且更富效率。比亚焦和他姐姐都希望皮耶罗能在他所属的政府部门谋到一份差事—— 当然他本人的职位并不高，是他的好友马基雅维利的属下。马基雅维利现在被派遣出使他国，对皮耶罗这个孩子来说，机会真是难得，他可以借此学学怎样为人处世。而且，比亚焦也清楚，马基雅维利做指导者正是不二人选。这件事是紧急确定下来的，因为直到马基雅维利拿到国文和安全通行证的前一天才说好。马基雅维利性情和蔼，跟他的很多朋友都是好友，当比亚焦提出让他带上皮耶罗时，他毫不犹豫地答应下来。但孩子的母亲，尽管觉得这个机会不可多得，可心中未免还是有些忐忑。这个孩子从来没有离开过自己，这么年轻就要到一个敌对的国度去了！而且，皮耶罗是个好孩子，她担心马基雅维利会把他带坏了，因为她清楚马基雅维利是个怎样放荡的家伙，风流成性，声名狼藉，而且没有一丁点儿的羞耻心，总喜欢到处讲述跟城里女人和路边小店女招待的那些风流韵事，这让任何一个正经女子听了都会脸红。尤为糟糕的是，他总能把这类事情讲得让人忍俊不禁，即使被他惹恼，你也很难板起脸来。
比亚焦劝解道：“亲爱的弗兰切斯卡，尼科洛是个已婚男人，那些放浪习惯他会改掉的。他妻子玛丽埃塔是个好女人，而且很爱他。在家不用花钱就能得到的东西非要跑到外面去买，你认为他会这样傻吗？”
“如果他妻子不是那样全心全意地对他，像他那样离开女人就没法活的人绝不会满足于仅仅拥有一个女人的。”她说道。

比亚焦跟三十三岁的马基雅维利大致同年，但因为他娶了当时著名学者马尔西利奥·费奇诺—— 他曾经得到过当时统治这个城市的梅迪奇家族的资助—— 的女儿，他得以比马基雅维利更早地进入政府工作。那个时候，个人功勋可以让人获得某项职务，权势人物也可施展自己的影响力帮人觅得职位。比亚焦中等身材，体型肥胖，长着一张圆脸，面色红润，总带着一副老好人的神色。他待人诚恳，工作踏实，没有嫉妒心，清楚自己的不足，满足于自己的卑微职位；与此同时，他讲究生活质量，喜欢拥有志趣相投的伙伴，因为没有过高要求，所以算是一个乐天派。他不是个光彩夺目的人，但也绝不蠢笨愚陋。倘若果真如此，马基雅维利就无法忍受与他为伍了。
