Author Description

萧红（1911—1942），中国现代著名女作家。被誉为“20世纪30年代的文学洛神”，民国四大才女之一。学名张秀环，后改名张廼莹，另有笔名悄吟、玲玲、田娣等。黑龙江省呼兰县人。代表作品有：小说《生死场》《呼兰河传》《马伯乐》，散文《孤独的生活》，长篇组诗《砂粒》等。多部作品入编语文教材。

第一章
马伯乐在抗战之前就很胆小的。
他的身体不十分好，可是也没有什么病。看外表，他很瘦。但是终年不吃什么药，偶尔伤了风，也不过多吸几支烟就完了。纸烟并不能医伤风，可是他左右一想，也到底上算，吃了药，不也是白吃吗？伤风是死不了人的。
他自己一伤风，就这么办。
若是他的孩子伤了风，或是感冒了，他就买饼干给他们吃，他说：
“吃吧，不吃白不吃，就当药钱把它吃了。”
孩子有了热度，手脚都发烧的，他就拿了一块浸了冷水的毛巾不断地给围在孩子的头上。他很小心地坐在孩子的旁边，若看了孩子一睁开眼睛，他就连忙把饼干盒打开：
“要吃一点吗？爸爸拿给你。”
那孩子立刻把眼睛闭上了，胸脯不住地喘着。
过了一会，孩子睁开眼睛要水喝，他赶快又把饼干盒子拿过去。孩子大口地喝水，饼干，连睬也没有睬。
他拿了一个杯子来。他想了半天才想出这个方法来，把饼干泡到杯中，孩子喝水时不就一道喝下去了吗？
从热水瓶倒了一些开水，用一只小匙子呱嘟嘟地搅了一阵，搅得不冷不热，拿到他自己嘴上尝尝。吃得了，他端着杯在旁边等候着，好像要把杯子放下，要用的时候就来不及了。等了半天，孩子没有醒，他等得不耐烦就把孩子招呼醒。问他：
“要喝水吗？”
“不，我要尿尿。”
“快喝点水再尿，快喝点……”
他用匙子搅了一下泡在杯中稀溜溜的东西，向着孩子的嘴倒去，倒得满鼻子都是糨糊。孩子往鼻子上乱抓，抓了满手，一边哭着，一边把尿也尿在床上了。
“这算完。”
马伯乐骂了一声，他去招呼孩子的妈妈去了。
临去的时候，他拿起那糨糊杯子，自己吞下去了。那东西在喉管里，像要把气给堵断了似的，他连忙把脖子往长伸着，并用手在脖子上按摩了一会，才算完全咽下去了。
孩子不生病的时候，他很少买给孩子什么东西吃，就是买了也把它放到很高的地方，他都是把它放在挂衣箱上。馋得孩子们搬着板凳，登着桌子，想尽了方法爬到挂衣箱上去。
因此马伯乐屋里的茶杯多半是掉了把柄的，那都是孩子们抢着爬挂衣箱弄掉地下而打去了的。
马伯乐最小的那个女孩——雅格，长得真可爱，眼睛是深黑深黑的，小胳膊胖得不得了，有一天妈妈不在家里，她也跟着哥哥们爬上挂衣箱去。原来那顶上放着三个大白梨。
正都爬到顶上，马伯乐从走廊上来了。隔着玻璃窗子，他就喊了一声：
“好东西，你们这群小狼崽子！”
由于他的声音过于大了一点，雅格吓得一抖从高处滚下来，跌到痰盂上了。
从那时起，漂亮的雅格右眼上落了一个很大的伤疤。
马伯乐很胆小，但他却机警异常，他聪明得很，他一看事情不好了，他收拾起箱子来就跑。他说：
“万事总要留个退步。”
他之所谓“退步”就是“逃跑”。是凡一件事，他若一觉得悲观，他就先逃。逃到哪里去呢？他自己常常也不知道，但是他是勇敢的，他不顾一切，好像洪水猛兽在后边追着他，使他逃得比什么都快。
有一年他去上海就是逃着去的。他跟他父亲说，说要到上海××大学去念书。他看他父亲不回答，第二天，他又问了一次，父亲竟因为这样重复地问而发怒了，把眼镜摘下来狠狠地瞪了他一眼。
他一看，不好了，这一定是太太在里边做的怪。而他那时候恰巧和一位女子谈着恋爱，这事情太太也和他吵了几次。大概是太太跑到父亲面前告了状吧？说我追着那女子要去上海。这若再住在家里不走，可要惹下乱子的。
他趁着这两天太太回娘家，他又向父亲问了一次关于他要到上海读书的问题，看看父亲到底答应不答应。父亲果然把话说绝了：“不能去，不能去。”
当天晚上，他就收拾了提包，他想是非逃不可了。
提包里什么都带着，牙刷牙粉。只就说牙刷吧，他打开太太的猪皮箱，一看有十几只，他想：都带着呀，不带白不带，将来要想带也没这个机会了。又看见了毛巾、肥皂，是“力士牌”的，这肥皂很好。到哪儿还不是洗脸呢！洗脸就少不了肥皂的。又看到了太太的花手帕，一共有一打多，各种样的，纱的、麻的、绸子的，其中还有很高贵的几张，太太自己俭省着还没舍得用，现在让他拿去了。他得意得很。他心里说：
“这守财奴呵，你不用你给谁省着？”
马伯乐甜蜜蜜的自己笑起来，他越看那小手帕越好看。
“这若送给……她，该多好呵！”（“她”即其爱人。）
马伯乐得意极了，关好了这个箱子又去开第二个。总之到临走的时候，他已经搜刮满了三只大箱子和两只小箱子。
领带连新的带旧的一共带了二十多条，总之，所有的领带，他都带上了。新袜子、旧袜子一共二十几双，有的破得简直不能用了，有的穿脏了还没有洗，因为他没多余工夫检查一番，也都一齐塞在箱子里了。
余下他所要不了的，他就倒满一地，屋子弄得一塌糊涂。太太的爽身粉，拍了一床。破鞋、破袜子，连孩子们的一些东西，扔得满地都是。反正他也不打算回来了。
这个家庭，他是厌恶之极，平庸、沉寂、无生气……
青年人久住在这样的家里是要弄坏了的，是要腐烂了的，会要满身生起青苔来的，会和梅雨天似的使一个活泼的现代青年满身生起绒毛来，就和那些海底的植物一般。洗海水浴的时候，脚踏在那些海草上边，那种滑滑的粘腻感觉，是多么使人不舒服！慢慢地，青年在这个家庭里，会变成那个样子，会和海底的植物一样。总之，这个家庭是呆不得的，是要昏庸老朽了的。你就看看父亲吧，每天早晨起来，向上帝祷告，要祷告半个多钟头。父亲是跪着的，把眼镜脱掉，那喃喃的语声好像一个大蜂子绕着人的耳朵，嗡嗡的，分不清他在嘟嘟些个什么。有时把两只手扣在脸上，好像石刻的人一样，他一动不动，祷告完了戴起眼镜来，坐在客厅里用铁梨木制的中国古式的长桌边上，读那本剑英牧师送给他的涂了金粉的《圣经》。那本《圣经》装潢得很高贵，所以只有父亲一个人翻读，连母亲都不准许动手，其余家里别的人那就更不敢动手了，比马家的家谱还更尊严了一些。自从父亲信奉了耶稣教之后，把家谱竟收藏起来了，只有在过年的时候，取出来摆了一摆，并不像这本《圣经》那样，是终年到尾不准碰一碰的摆着。
马伯乐的父亲，本是纯粹的中国老头，穿着中国古铜色的大团花长袍、礼眼呢千层底鞋，手上养着半寸长的指甲。但是他也学着说外国话，当地教会的那些外国朋友来他家里，那老头就把佣人叫成“Boy”，喊着让他们拿啤酒来：
“Beer，beer！”（啤酒）
等啤酒倒到杯子里，冒着白沫，他就向外国朋友说：
“Please！”（请）
是凡外国的什么都好，外国的小孩子是胖的，外国女人是能干的，外国的玻璃杯很结实，外国的毛织品有多好。
因为对于外国人的过于佩服，父亲是常常向儿子们宣传的，让儿子学外国话，提倡儿子穿西装。
这点，差不多连小孙子也做到了，小孙子们都穿起和西洋孩子穿的那样的短裤来，肩上背着背带。早晨起来时都一律说：
“Good morning！”
太阳一升高了，就说：
“Good day！”
见了外国人就说：
“Hello，How do you do？”
祖父也不只尽教孙儿们这套，还教孙儿们读《圣经》。有时把孙儿们都叫了来，恭恭敬敬地站在桌前，教他们读一段《圣经》。
所读的在孩子们听来不过是，“我主耶稣说”，“上帝叫我们不如此做”，“大卫撕裂了衣裳”，“牧羊人伯利恒”，“说谎的法利赛人”……
听着听着，孩子们有的就要睡着了，把平时在教堂里所记住的《圣经》上的零零碎碎的话也都混在一道了。站在那里挖着鼻子，咬着指甲，终天痴呆呆的连眼珠都不转了，打起盹来。
这时候祖父一声令下，就让他们散了去。散到过道的外边，半天工夫那些孩子们都不会吵闹。因为他们揉着眼睛的揉着眼睛，打着哈欠的打着哈欠。
还有守安息日的日子，从早晨到晚上，不准买东西，买菜买果都不准的。夏天的时候，卖大西瓜的一担一担地过去而不准买。要吃必得前一天买进来放着，第二天吃。若是前一天忘记了，或是买了西瓜而没买甜瓜，或杏子正下来的时候，李子也下来了，买了这样难免就忘了那样。何况一个街市可买的东西太多了，总是买不全的。因此孩子们在这一天哭闹得太甚时，做妈妈的就只得偷着买了给他们吃。这若让老太爷知道了，虽然在这守安息日的这天，什么话也不讲；到了第二天，若是谁做了错事，让他知道了，他就把他叫过去，又是在那长桌上，把涂着金粉的《圣经》打开，给他们念一段《圣经》。
马家的传统就是《圣经》和外国话。
有一次正是做礼拜回来，马伯乐的父亲拉着八岁的雅格的哥哥。一出礼拜堂的门，那孩子看一个满身穿着外国装的，他以为是个外国人，就回过头去向人家说：
“How do you do？”
那个人在孩子的头顶上拍了一下说：
“你这个小孩，外国话说得好哪！”
那孩子一听是个中国人，很不高兴，于是拉着祖父就大笑起来：
“爷爷，那个中国人，他不会说外国话呀！”
……
