Author Description

赵德发，男，1955年生，山东省菖南县人。曾当过教师、机关干部，1988—1990年在山东大学中文系作家班学习，现任山东省作家协会副主席兼日照市文联主席、作家协会主席。中国作家协会会员，一级作家。自1980年开始创作，至今已发表、出版各类文学作品五百多万字，主要作品有长篇小说“农民三部曲”《缱绻与决绝》《祖祖辈辈》《青烟或白雾》以及《双手合十》。先后获第三届人民文学奖，《小说月报》第四、第八届百花奖，首届齐鲁文学奖，首届泰山文艺奖，第四、五、七届山东省精品工程奖等。另有《中国作家》等刊物奖十余次。

Book Abstract

第一章蚂蚱世民国二十四年，春天、夏天都熬过去了，律条村的雹子树仍旧没有发芽。
望着满坡长势良好、丰收在望的庄稼，农人们松一口气：好了，雹子老爷今年不来了。雹子老爷忘了他这个小老婆了。
人们就笑着去瞅村东北角倒流河边的那棵雹子树。这么笑着去瞅，便发现那树因为没等来雹子老爷的宠幸显得多么憔悴多么难看。她三丈高的身躯上没有一片绿叶，粗粗细细的枝条全都干枯着，不知情的人会笃定无疑地将其当作一株死树。
只有亲眼目睹过她另一种活法的人才会相信，她并没死，她的心与骨一直暗暗地活着，当某一天有一场雷雨挟着雹子袭来，她就会在一夜之间发出芽来，三五天便枝青叶绿。那叶子呈卵状，每遇风雨便“哈哈”作响，恰似年轻女子的笑声。至秋深，那叶子渐渐变黄，继而转红，霜降后红到极致，在万木凋零的初冬里那叶也不轻易落去，矫矫不群惹人注目。落叶的时候是在下雪天，雪下得缓叶子也落得缓，雪下得急叶子也落得急，红白交错，在天地间写出令人费解的文章。当然，如果某一年一直不下雹子，她就会一直干枯着，两年三年不下雹子她也还是这样，直到某一天一场雹子从天而降。
这棵奇异的雹子树出现于何时，律条村的人们谁也说不清楚。
老族长许瀚义说，他十八岁成年时这树的胸围就是四柞零四指，现在还是四柞零四指。懂阴阳八卦的许正雩说，三十年前他亲手量过，夏至的中午这树影长三丈三尺三，现在到夏至再量还是三丈三尺三。这树为何有此秉性，村里一代代人都相信一个说法：她是雹子老爷的小老婆，她喜欢雹子老爷糟蹋。雹子老爷一来所向披靡，万种草木一败涂地，唯有这树承老爷之恩泽，纳老爷之精血，生机勃发，显一番丽姿媚态。因了二者之间的关系，沐河一带来雹子是经常的，而且都是自西北而来向东南而去，路线固定。树之福却为人之祸，律条村人曾对此树生出过刻骨怨恨。且访查外乡，闻听有些地方曾生过此树，均因恨其勾引雹子老爷前来作孽而将其砍倒。
过去的漫长岁月里，律条村人也多次动过此念，但都被族中老人以伤天理为由阻止。有年轻毛嫩者不服，问：引来雹子老爷毁百禾，害百姓，才是伤天理哩！族老拈须摇头：不不不，天理玄妙无穷，是难论成毁的。成也是天理，毁也是天理。你没见外乡砍了雹子树，雹子老爷依旧去？人们想想也是，继而猜想那是雹子老爷前去凭吊他的爱妾，遂念那雹子老爷也可怜：人们为何容忍人间的老爷妻妾成群，偏偏容忍不了天上的老爷呢？人间老爷妻妾成群的另一面是百姓受苦，那么天上老爷让你受点苦你就受不了啦？你公然把他的一个个小老婆给杀了，可见人心是何等嚣张。
这么一想，就泯了杀心，让村头这棵树继续活着。民国十七年春夏之交，雹子老爷又一次光顾律条村时，与这树缱绻得过久过狂，地上的冰疙瘩积了一尺多厚，冰疙瘩以上青苗无存。一些年轻汉子持刀锯聚集于雹子树下，非要杀了她不可。老族长许瀚义听说后，踩着冰疙瘩一溜趔趄飞跑而来，扇起一只老掌狠揍那帮意欲行凶者，众人却不服也不退。正僵持中，随族长而来的十一岁少年许景行说了一句话：别杀她，总不能叫雹子老爷打光棍吧？革命党还兴一夫一妻哩！人们听了这话想想也是，让雹子老爷打了光棍，他的脾气说不定会变得更坏。他要一年来这里哭上几场，咱们就甭想活啦！这么一想，人们将杀心收起，旋即四散回家，急忙套牛翻地补种庄稼。
然而民国二十四年的初秋，雹子树年内不再发芽长叶的结论给人们带来的喜悦心情并没能保持多久。因为有一天傍晚，在这树下发生了一件令全村正人君子都羞于启齿的事情。
那事是许景行的嫂子小椹发现的。
那天傍晚，小椹把晚饭做好，端到院中的桌子上让公婆、丈夫和小叔子吃着，她便依照惯例到院角鸡栏鹅圈那儿清点一遍，看是否还有没回来的扁毛畜生。鸡栏里，八只老鸡和十四只小鸡一只不少，都趴在那里目瞑瞑欲睡；而鹅圈里却是六根长脖子一齐伸向她且“嘎嘎”地叫着，似在报告同类的减少。小椹瞅了瞅，是缺了那只最能下蛋的白母鹅。小椹想这就怪了，这些鹅白天到村后的河边吃草，每到傍晚是知道回家的，从来一只不少，今天是怎么啦？她向婆婆说了一声，便扭着一双小脚出门寻鹅。
院里的一家人继续吃饭，过了不大一会儿，院门一响，小椹就抱着那只大白鹅回来了。让人不解的是，她进院的脚步慌慌张张，脸色气急败坏，而且将鹅往鹅圈里一扔就跑到里院自己住的房里，接着发出哭泣声来。许正琮与老婆许明氏面面相觑不知出了什么事情，忙叫大儿子许景言去问。儿子去了很快又回来，摸起刚才没吃完的煎饼继续往嘴里送。许明氏叫着大儿子的小名问：“木桶，你媳妇遇上了啥事？”许景言咧咧嘴摆摆头：“没事没事。”然而东厢房里哭声依旧。许正琮便示意老婆过去。许明氏过去低声问询一会儿，出来后，一张变黄了多年的老脸奇怪地泛上了一层酽红。
