罗杰·泽拉兹尼（Roger Joseph Zelazny）， （May 13, 1937 - June 14, 1995）美国著名作家，在科幻、奇幻两大领域均达到了极其罕见的巅峰状态。1960年代，他率先倡导科幻小说写作要从心理学、社会学和语言学三方面考虑，打破太空冒险科幻一统天下的局面，被誉为“新浪潮”的领军人物。

“云层上有一条裂缝，西边。”
阎摩走过来，顺着他的视线看过去，然后皱起眉，点了点头。
“没错，”他说，“留在那儿，给我些建议。”
他朝一堆操纵杆走去。
在他们头顶上，不断转动的莲花猛地停下，随后转向那片未被云层遮蔽的天空。
“很好，”他说，“我们有些进展了。”
他把手伸向一个独立的控制板，先拨动一串开关，再调好两个刻度盘。
信号传到了他们脚下的洞穴中；在神庙的地窖里，其余的预备工作已然启动，宿主准备就绪。
塔克高喊：“云层开始合拢了！”
“没什么大不了，”对方答道，“现在鱼已上钩，从涅槃进入莲花，他来了。”
雷声早已停息，雨点滴落在莲花上，发出冰雹般的噼啪声。蓝色的闪电盘绕在山顶上，仿佛巨蛇嘶嘶地吐着信子。
阎摩合上了最后一条电路。
塔克问：“又一次获得肉身，你觉得他会作何感想？”
“走开，拿脚剥香蕉皮去！”
塔克把这话当成解散的命令，于是离开房间，留阎摩自己关闭机器。他经过一条走廊，沿着宽阔的楼梯朝下走，直至平台上方才站住。就在这时，他听见了谈话声和凉鞋拖在地上的声响——有人正从侧厅外向自己这边移动。
塔克毫不迟疑地往墙上爬去。他攀着刻在墙上的一串黑豹和对面的一排大象爬上了房椽，随后躲进一片阴影中，静静地等待着。
两个穿深色长袍的僧侣从拱门外走进来。
“那她为什么不帮帮他们，为他们驱散云层呢？”
另一个人年纪更大，身材也胖得多，他耸了耸肩：“我并非圣人，无法回答这样的问题。我只知道，若非过于焦虑，她绝不会向他们提供庇护，也不会任阎摩如此利用圣所。但谁又能指明黑夜的界限呢？”
“还有女人的秉性，”第一个人接口道，“我听说，就连司祭们事先也不知道她会来。
“也许吧。无论如何，这似乎是个吉兆。”
“的确如此。”
他们由另一扇拱门离开了，塔克聆听着两人远去的脚步声，直至四周只剩下一片寂静。
他仍然没有离开自己的藏身之处。
僧侣们口中的“她”只可能是拉特莉女神本人，是向圣雄萨姆的信徒提供庇护的这个团体所敬拜的女神。要知道，拉特莉也是遭到天国放逐继而披上肉身凡胎的神祇之一，她有足够的理由对整件事愤愤不平；塔克很清楚，单只是提供庇护，她已经承担了极大的风险，更别说在事情进行时现身了。若有人走漏消息，让风声传到某些人的耳朵里，拉特莉回归天庭的任何希望都将化为泡影。在塔克的记忆中，拉特莉是一位有着深色头发和银色眼珠的美人，她的月亮战车由黑檀木与铬打造，黑色与白色的牡马拉着车，同为黑白两色的护卫侍奉左右；当她驶过天街时，其荣光令女神萨拉斯瓦蒂也黯然失色。想到这儿，他的心在毛茸茸的胸膛里猛地一跃。一定要再次见到她。很久以前的某个夜晚，在尚未化为猴身的那段快乐的日子里，他曾在撒满星光的露台上与她共舞。只是一小会儿，但依然令他难以忘怀；身为猴子却又拥有这样的记忆，是多么艰难的事情。

一座高塔矗立在神庙的东北角。塔里有个房间，据说女神的圣灵会在那儿停留。房间每日打扫，换上清洁的亚麻布，点燃纯净的熏香，还有一份祭献放在房内离门不远处。那扇门通常都上了锁。
当然还有窗户。究竟人类能否从这样的窗户进出，至今无人知晓。塔克证明至少猴子是可以的。
天空像大狗般发出阵阵低沉的咆哮。塔克爬上神庙的屋顶，开始向塔上攀登。他借助墙砖和形状各异的装饰物往上爬，终于抓住了窗台正下方的墙面。雨水滴滴答答地落在他身上，房里传出小鸟的歌声。蓝色的窗帘垂到窗台之外，底端已经被雨水浸湿了。
他抓住窗沿，抬起身子，让自己能一窥屋里的情形。只见她身着一袭深蓝色的纱丽，正背对窗户，坐在房间另一头的长凳上。
塔克手脚并用爬上窗台，清清嗓子。她立刻转过身来。面纱使人无法看清她的容貌。她透过面纱望着他，随后起身穿过房间。
塔克沮丧不已。她的体形曾经那样优美，如今却显出臃肿的腰身；她的步态曾经有如摇曳的树枝般灵动，如今却沉重笨拙；她的肤色过于暗淡；即使有面纱的遮掩，鼻梁与下颚的线条也显得太过突出。
塔克低下头。
“‘于是你走近我们，你一来，我们就回到家园，’”他吟唱道，“‘正如倦鸟归巢，回到树梢。’”
她站在原地，一如正殿里自己的神像般纹丝不动。
“‘让我们免受母狼与公狼之害，让我们免受盗贼的侵扰，噢，夜之女神啊，请保佑我们平安度过漫漫长夜。’”
她缓缓地抬起胳膊，把手放在他的头上。“祝福你，小东西，”过了片刻，她说道，“很不幸，除了祝福我再无法给你什么。我既不能提供保护，也无法赐予美貌——对我自己而言，这些也已是难得的奢侈品。你叫什么名字？”
“塔克。”
她摸了摸前额。
