安德烈·纪德（1869-1951）是法国二十世纪最重要的作家之一，也是法国乃至整个现代西方文学史、思想史上最重要的人物之一，因其“内容广博和艺术意味深长的作品这些作品以对真理的大无畏的热爱，以锐敏的心理洞察力表现了人类的问题与处境”而荣获一九四七年度诺贝尔文学奖。

天黑了，我将手插进长发中，熄了灯，戴上皮帽，裹上大衣——现在我打开窗户，叼起形状怪异的长杆儿大烟斗，划着火柴故意迟迟不点烟，进一步刺激欲望，事先就享受这美妙的时刻——现在我蜷缩在扶手椅中，看着这些小金星，而烟斗里冒出美丽的蓝烟——我正是为此抽烟斗的，因为烟草本身并不给我带来乐趣，我仅仅是为了观赏你们哟，一缕缕美丽的青烟。青烟缭绕，冉冉升起，一直飞升，直到消失在夜色中。
这工夫，瓦格纳的和弦，一阵阵袭来，仿佛白天而降，朦胧而神秘，荡漾着我的幻想，摇曳着我的思绪。我的梦幻指给我看萨拉米纳岛，以及希腊人的喜悦；太阳好似放射欢笑的光芒，他们全都沉醉，高唱阿波罗颂歌。

我最终认为，人靠自身是做不好的，凡是做得像样的一些事，恐怕无不暗中受上帝的启迪。
我觉得他所必然产生的忧伤，必定有益，必定像《福音》的忧伤那样导向生活。它导致自我意志的完全放弃，完全交到上帝的手中支配。这是令人向往的吗？我要行动，喜欢简单自然；反之，为了引起一个表面上极为简单的行动，居然调动起那样的激情和思想，实在是咄咄怪事。
我们最重大和最高尚的行为，至少具有这种架势的行为，怎么就不能完全摆脱各种庸俗的动机，不再考虑别人如何看我们，也不再考虑在别人面前摆姿态的乐趣。虚荣者的虚荣。
伟人仅仅比我们高出一头，但是脚始终踏在污泥中，想想是多么可悲的事情。
大地上人这么坏，却有如此美好的事物，又该怎么解释呢？这是上帝的一种映象。
