指令
当刚刚落成的微光城还无人入住时，疲倦的首席建筑师和助理建筑师坐在一起，谈论这座城市的未来。
“人们必须要在这座城市里居住至少两百年，或许是两百二十年。”首席建筑师说。
“时间足够长吗？”他的助理问。
“应该够了，但我们也无法确定将来的事。”
“那么到时，人们如何才能知道接下来该怎么做呢？”助理又问。
首席建筑师回答说：“当然，我们会留下指令。”
“可是由谁来保管指令呢？谁是值得信任的人，能够保障这些指令始终安全和隐秘？”
“我们将把指令放在一个安装有定时锁的盒子里，设定好开启的时间，由市长来保管。”
“市长会被告知盒子里的秘密吗？”
“不，只需要告诉他们，在盒子自行开启之前，他们都没有必要，也不被允许去查看里面的信息。”
“如此，第一任市长把盒子交付给他的下一任，由后者再传递给下一任，依此下去，若干年后，他们所有人都能够始终保密？”
“我们还能做什么呢？”首席建筑师反问，“这项使命有太多的不确定性。两百年后，或许这座城市已经空无一人，又或许城外也已经没有安全的归宿。”
于是，微光城的第一任市长奉命仔细保管这个盒子，并发誓保守秘密。当她任满退休后，便将盒子交付给她的继任者，后者同样保守着盒子的秘密，第三任市长亦是如此。事情按计划顺利进行了许多年，直到盒子传到了第七任市长的手里。他本不如前几任市长正直高尚，又因为得了当时城里正在流行的咳嗽病而愈发绝望。他以为盒子里的秘密能救他的命，便把盒子从集会大厅地下室的隐藏处拿了出来，带回家，想用锤子把它砸开。
但当时的他身体虚弱，花尽所有的力气也只是把盒盖敲得陷进去一些。还没来得及把盒子物归原处或交付给继任者，他就已经病死了。于是，这个盒子被塞在壁橱后面的一堆旧包裹当中，年复一年，无人知晓，直到设定的时限来临，盒子静静地开启了。

工作分配日微光城的天空永远是黑暗的。城市的唯一光源来自安装在建筑物和一些大型广场中央立柱上的巨大泛光灯。当灯亮时，街道被笼罩在一片微微泛黄的红光中；灯光在经过的路人身后投射出长长的影子，愈来愈短，随即又伸展开。在每天晚上九点到次日凌晨六点之间，所有的灯都会熄灭，城市陷入一片黑暗，仿佛所有的人都被蒙上了眼睛。
有时，黑暗也会在中午降临。微光城已然陈旧，这座城市的所有部分，包括输电线，都急需修缮。因此，灯光会时不时闪烁不定，随即熄灭。这种时候对微光城的居民们来说真是糟糕透了。人们突然停在马路当中，或呆若木鸡地站在屋里，彻底的漆黑让他们不敢移动半步。尽管不愿去想，现实却在提醒他们：有一天，这座城市的灯光将永远熄灭。
但绝大多数时候，生活一如往常般继续着。大人们各司其职，十二岁以下的孩子则到学校上学。在最后一个学年的最后一天，他们将被分配去做不同的工作，这一天被称为“工作分配日”。
毕业生们聚集在微光学校的八号教室。在第二百四十一年的工作分配日，这间通常从一大早开始就喧闹不止的教室里鸦雀无声。二十四名学生笔直地端坐在略显狭小的课桌前，静静地等待着。
桌椅被摆放成四排六列的矩阵。最后一排坐着一个名叫莉娜·梅菲的苗条女孩。她正把自己的一小缕黑色长发绕在手指上，缠紧，又解开，反反复复。偶尔，她低头扯掉自己那件破旧披肩上的线头，或弯腰拎一拎短袜，袜口已经松了，总是从脚踝上滑下来。她的一只脚不自觉地轻轻敲打着地板。
教室第二排坐着一个名叫冬·海洛的男孩。他耸着肩，眯着双眼，专心致志，双手紧紧握在一起。他的头发乱蓬蓬的，仿佛有一阵子没梳理了。乌黑、浓密的眉毛使他在大多数时候都显得不苟言笑，而当他着急或生气时，两道浓眉则会在前额连成一条笔直的黑线。他身上的棕色灯芯绒夹克已经旧得连褶皱都几乎要被磨平了。
这两个孩子都在急切地许着愿。冬的愿望很明确。他一遍又一遍地重复着，嘴唇微动，仿佛说上一千遍，这个愿望就能实现。莉娜则在脑海中勾画出她的愿望：她想象着自己身披红色夹克，奔跑着穿过微光城的大街小巷。她努力使这个美好的画面显得明亮而真实。
