常乡长说：你明天去县分配办人事局办办手续，手续一过来，就可上班。
齐三太趁势说：瑞安，你的事常乡长帮了大忙了，到时候可不要忘了。

事情就这么定了下来，张元成两口子高兴得一夜没有睡着觉。第二天一大早就催着瑞安快到县里去办手续。张瑞安推着自行车要出门的时候，元成又把他叫住了，说：瑞安哪，我昨晚忘了问了，乡里这事到底谁说了算？
张瑞安不知老爹问这个有什么动机，想了想说：常乡长，常利民说了算呀。
元成又问：他昨天晚上喝醉了没有？
瑞安说：喝醉了。
张元成就唏嘘一声：哎呀，你不该把他灌醉的，人一醉就乱了心神了，他要再跟那个什么建材局的肖局长一样，乱上人家大姑娘的床，这事不是又飞了吗？
张瑞安笑了，说：爹，哪有那么多上错床的事，看你吓的。
张元成说：世事难料啊.现在这世道是想到的能发生，想不到的也能发生。瑞安呢，你不知道，经了这一事一事又一事，我都不敢笑了。
事情也真让元成给说准了，张瑞安的工作手续没有办成。不过，不是因为常利民乡长上错了床，而是人事局那边出了点麻烦。
张瑞安的机遇不太好，赶上人事冻结了。
张瑞安解释说：乡里已经同意接收了，只是过一下手续。
人事局那边却说：乡里同意就不能再等等看吗？
以后张瑞安又到人事局跑了几次，都是这话，弄到最后连常乡长都出马了也没能把人事局的门敲开。
齐三太说：这回是县长书记发的话，谁也不敢动，只能等了。
张元成知道这事后气得不行，说：乡里同意了，县里为什么不让咱过？县里一定是出了坏种了，不行我去找找，给他们评评理。说着拿起烟袋就要出门。张瑞安怕他到县里闹出什么笑话来，死劝活劝才给劝住了。
张瑞安只好从喜悦的高峰一下子又回到从前那种状态，刚开始几天还到乡里问一问，见一见常利民乡长和齐三太，他们也热情。到后来两个人看见他都有些躲避的意思，瑞安心里就有了些阴影，不过他没有表现出来。他变得有点不太好意思出门了，因为村里人都知道他将到乡里工作，而事实上工作的时间却遥遥无期。他的心情渐渐坏起来。又过了几天，乡政府的通讯员通知他到乡里去一趟。
张元成兴奋地说：一定是让你上班的。
张瑞安却觉得未必，他没有笑一声。骑着车子在路上走，他有一种天凉好个秋的心态，风很大，他的头发长了，风把他的长头发吹了起来。他想：才刚刚立秋，天怎么就凉了呢。
