本集拟收录芥川龙之介不同时期的短篇代表作15篇。芥川龙之介（1892～1927）日本小说家。龙之介的小说始于历史题材，如《罗生门》、《鼻子》、《偷盗》等；继而转向明治文明开化题材，如《舞会》、《阿富的贞操》、《偶人》等；后写作现实题材，如《桔子》、《一块地》以及《秋》等。在创作中注重技巧，风格纤细华丽，形式、结构完美，关心社会问题与人生问题。1925年发表自传性质小说《大岛寺信辅的半生》。1927年发表短篇《河童》，对资本主义社会及其制度作了尖锐的嘲讽。《玄鹤山房》，通过老画家之死，揭露家庭内部的纠葛，反映了人生的惨淡和绝望心情，暗示旧事物的衰亡和新时代的来临。写这篇作品时，芥川已萌自杀的念头，使以后的作品如《海市蜃楼》等充满了阴郁气氛。《河童》(1927)通过虚构的河童国，抨击人吃人的资本主义制度。遗作《齿轮》和《某傻子的一生》(1927)描述作者生前的思想状态。评论集《侏儒的话》(1923～1927)阐述了他对艺术和人生的看法。

《芥川龙之介短篇小说精选》：
果如传闻所言，门楼里横七竖八地扔着几具尸体。由于火光照射的范围比想象中的小，无法看清究竟有多少尸体。借着朦胧的火光，隐约可见一些男男女女的尸首，有的赤身裸体，有的穿戴整齐。这些尸体仿佛泥塑玩偶似的张着大嘴，摊着胳臂，四仰八叉地躺在地上。他们曾是活生生的人吗——实在令人无法想象。模糊的火光照到了尸体的肩膀和胸口等凸起的部位，而那些低凹的部位漆黑一片，仿佛不会说话的哑巴似的无声无息。
忽然，一股腐烂的尸臭来袭，家丁忍不住想要捂住鼻子。然而，就在那一刻，他忘记了捂鼻的冲动，一种强烈的感情取代了他的嗅觉。
原来家丁看到，尸首堆里蹲着一位老婆子！她身上穿着棕色衣服，长得又瘦又小，简直跟猴子似的。
她用右手举着一片点燃了的松明，直勾勾地注视着一具尸体的面容。从头发的长度来看，那多半是一具女尸吧。
家丁心中怀有六分恐怖和四分好奇，一时竟然忘记了呼吸。按照古籍的说法，便是毛骨悚然了。老婆子将松明插在地板缝隙中，双手抱起她一直都在凝视着的尸体头颅，仿佛母猴替小猴捉虱子似的，一根接一根地拔起死尸的头发来。手过之处，头发无不连根拔起。
眼见死尸的头发被一根根拔下来，家丁的恐怖也一点点消失殆尽，取而代之的是对老婆子的反感。这种感觉正在一点点地积聚起来——不，不单是对这老婆子，应该说对一切罪恶都感到反感和厌恶。此时，若是有人再次提起罗生门下的思考——“是饿死，还是当强盗”时，他一定会不假思索地选择饿死。他那颗嫉恶如仇的心，正像老婆子插在地板缝隙里的松明一样，熊熊燃烧起来了。
可他还是没弄明白老婆子拔下死人头发的原因，也就无从得知她的动机是善是恶。可在家丁看来，单凭她在雨夜时分来到罗生门下拔掉死人头发，便已犯下了不可饶恕的罪孽。当然，他早已忘记自己刚才铤而走险、落草为寇的企图了。
于是，家丁两腿一用力，猛地跃上楼梯。他手握刀柄，大步来到老婆子面前。老婆子吓得不轻，即刻如惊弓之鸟一般跳了起来。
“老家伙，你往哪里跑！”家丁大声呵斥，用身子挡住了在尸体中连滚带爬、慌忙逃跑的老婆子。
尽管老婆子试图推开家丁逃跑，可还是被他一把拉了回来。两人便在尸堆中扭打起来，可胜负早已分出。家丁抓住老婆子的胳臂，一把将她按倒在地。她的胳臂瘦骨嶙峋，如同鸡爪一般。
