《正红旗下》是老舍先生的最后一部作品，因为客观政治原因没有写完，只是一部辉煌巨著的开头，但即便是这样，也是他的代表作之一，在他的创作中占有非常重要的地位。

《正红旗下》仿佛有一种象征意义，它那没有写完的命运，就像老舍先生本人一样，也没有走到尽头，是突然中断的，悲剧一般地戛然而止。

《正红旗下》是老舍先生的自传体长篇小说，写了十一章，八万字，手稿有一百六十四页，刚刚写到主人公“我”不到一岁。

老舍先生的写作生涯是以创作长篇小说开始的，中间转为创作戏剧剧本，最后，又回归到长篇小说，中止在《正红旗下》上。

老舍先生去世的头一年，一九六五年，在北京香山乡间，他曾向他的老朋友王莹、谢和庚夫妇透露：他还有三部小说要写，一部是自传体，一部是八大胡同，一部是天桥。

那头一部，显然的指《正红旗下》，当时他已搁笔了两年多，但是，他没有忘记它，他惦念着它，心里依然在琢磨它，打着腹稿，等着有机会再提笔。

实际上，对《正红旗下》，他已琢磨了差不多一辈子。

他的另一位老朋友，他的拜把兄弟，大语言学家罗常培先生说过：老舍先生由年轻时期就已经开始为自传体长篇做准备了，描写一个家庭的历史，他一直为此在收集资料。

这样的小说创作，的确，早期已出现过一次，在一九三七年，题

目叫《小人物自述》，可惜，因战争而中断，只留下开头。当时，他把这个小说的开头寄给了天津的一个妇女杂志《方舟》连载。天津沦陷的前夕，那一期杂志刚刚印好，未等发行天津就落入日寇的手中，这杂志也就从此中止了自己的编辑和出版。那一期《方舟》老舍先生自也未见过，或许，直到去世，他也不曾知道《小人物自述》的开头曾经正式刋行问世过。不仅他本人不知道，连他的读者，甚至研究者，也全然不知。只是到了上世纪八十年代，上海图书馆馆员张炜先生在馆里保存的那最后一期《方舟》里才偶然发现了《小人物自述》。正因为有这样不知所终的结局，老舍先生自己在其它文章中并未提到过《小人物自述》的名字，只是说抗战前夕他同时在创作两部长篇小说，皆因战争而作废。

如果，由一九三七年写《小人物自述》算起，到一九六一、六二年开始写《正红旗下》止，一共是二十五年，差不多是半辈子了。的确，是酝酿了一生。

难怪，《正红旗下》是炉火纯青的写作了，饱含了一位老作家一生的心血。

一九六二年，老舍先生曾去广州参加全国话剧、儿童剧创作和观摩会议，他在大会发言中说，他正在创作一部小说，写得很慢很慢，一天只得几百字，连每一个标点符号都要想很久。

这是在说《正红旗下》的写作。

我曾经有幸旁听过老舍先生在家中朗诵自己的《正红旗下》片断。他晚年有个特殊的写作习惯，那就是朗诵自己的作品给朋友们听，目的是检验自己的文字是否通顺，是否上口，争求意见，便于修改。当然，这个办法对话剧剧本是特别有用的，对演员们的表演也有很大的启迪作用。所以，听老舍朗诵曾经是一个重要的程序，会召来许多人，仿佛是重大的节日一样，被认为是极大的享受。

老舍先生曾特别将《正红旗下》朗诵给金受申先生听，后者是他早期学生和后期同事，也是他的好朋友。金先生是旗人，是掌故民俗专家。作者念给他听，是专门征求他对小说中旗人生活里风俗方面的意见。有时，两人还要讨论半天。

老舍先生的书桌是红木三屉桌，他把《正红旗下》手稿放在书桌中间那个抽屉里，这是一个最重要的部位，拉开抽屉就是它。足见作者本人对它的重视，虽然没写完，但就一直这么放着，直到生命的最后一息，宛如随时都会返回到继续创作的样子。

《正红旗下》手稿还有一个特点：始终是作者自己手迹，没有抄稿。此前，写话剧剧本时，他聘有一位私人秘书，帮他抄稿，他本人再在抄好的稿件上修改，反复多次，所以，话剧剧本抄稿甚多。而《正红旗下》没有抄稿。估计，此时，抄稿已无必要。一是此时写得慢，每天所得不多，不必有那么快的周期和相应的写作方式了。二是遇有修改多的地方，乾脆自己再慢慢重写一遍。

所以《正红旗下》手稿很干净，很漂亮，是手稿中上品。

“文革”起来了，老舍先生悲惨地离开了人世。保存这份他珍爱的未完手稿就成了全家人的中心大事。我们在第一时间，借抄家人员吩咐母亲胡絜青把属于她自己的字画和东西由老舍书房中拿出来之机，将这份手稿偷偷转移了。

一开始，将它藏在废旧的烟筒里，藏在煤堆里。后来，形势越来越紧，索性转移出小院，到了北京林学院家属宿舍，再转移到对外友协家属宿舍，再转移到铁道部家属宿舍，再到南苑……就像一只被追逐的小鹿，到处躲，不停的跑，绕着城转，哪儿有危险就赶快躲，终于，被完整无缺地保存了下来。

打倒“四人帮”之后，手稿被《人民文学》杂志拿去发表，发表时还隆重地加了编者按，说它是一部未完的巨著。发表之后，立刻引起轰动，接着人民文学出版社出版了单行本，有非常漂亮的插图。

《正红旗下》手稿由家人捐献给了中国现代文学馆，永久保留在那里。此次出版手稿，得到了中国现代文学馆的大力帮助，翻拍成光盘。

《正红旗下》已被译成多种文字在国外发行，它还被改编成话剧、曲剧等剧种搬上了舞台。可惜，老舍先生自己都未能看到。

不过，“我、母亲、大姐、二姐、姑母、福海、宗月大师……”都活在手稿里，活在书里，永远不会死。
